Falcons to hire Bryan Cox as defensive line coach

By D. Orlando Ledbetter

The Falcons have hired former NFL player and coach Bryan Cox as defensive line coach, the team announced on Saturday.

After the 4-12 season, the Falcons fired defensive line coach Ray Hamilton.

Cox was the pass-rush specialist for Tampa Bay last season, but was not retained  by new coach Lovie Smith. He has coached with Falcons defensive coordinator Mike Nolan in the past.

Smitty has hired another loser. Just because he was once tough does not make him  a good coach. TD has screwd this team up with his soory draft picks. Anybody can pick a #1 draft pick especially if you trade 6 players away to get 1 guy you are bound to get a good pick. TD picks are terrible, who in their right mind would pick an injury prone Jeria Perry over a stud like Clay Matthews, I can go on and on with TD sorry picks. we are 2 years away from the play offs , IF we are Lucky!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, the assistant coaches forgot how to coach in one offseason? How about reality, Mr Blank, Smith and Dimitroff? Knute Rockne couldn't coach the bunch of career backups and inexperienced players y'all put on the field this past year. The pass rush started going south when Big Grady Jackson was released, and no one was left to collapse the middle of the line. The O line started going soft when Dahl, and then Clabo were released within a couple of year span. It's not the coaches that changed, it's the quality of the personnel, and that TD's fault.

We needed Julio because if he's healthy, he's a stud. But the big uglies on both sides of the ball...that's where the games are won.

Put Roddy on the block, pick up a couple of draft picks we can use. Or a starter and a lower pick. He's still very good, but he may be a luxury we can't afford.

This guy is awesome. He was one of the meanest nastiest players in football. Only Parcells could tame him. If he brings a third of that nasty to this defense they will be formidable.I LOVE this move.

atl have no talent on the oline or dline---new coaches don't matter.  thomas traded away a bunch of draft picks to get a receiver--they have holes all over the roster.

Just window dressing.  The Falcons need talent on the field.  Dimitroff screwed this team up so bad in one year, they'll likely take several years to recover.

Glad we could pick up someone from that stalwart TB D. You know the one that had 3 more sacks than the Falcons. History ofMatt summed up the Tice hire perfectly.

This is all CYA window dressing. Hill/Hamilton vs Tice/Cox not makes not an iota of difference. The teams flaws lie squarely with Smith and TD. One maybe, two more years . Arthur will get serious about selling tickets for his corporate welfare project and these two will be gone for a high profile hire.

He's was one mean dude as a player!!! I believe he's from East St. Louis (toughest city in America!) Had the chance to meet him when the Packers were trying to sign him as a free agent in 96. He went to Chicago. He was very gracious.

If nothing lse, he will amp up the intensity level of the defensive line.

I like the hire.  He's a guy that always played hard and with an attitude.  Hopefully he can help to develop some of the young DE's on the roster.

 Different system, Jek.

Lovie runs a Tampa 2, all time zone D. Nolan mixes his coverages, man and zone, and the d-line has to adjust how they play. Cox's coaching, coming from the Parcell's tree, fits a more aggressive scheme.

Mike Tice was a horrible, cronyism hire. His o-lines, everywhere he's been the coach, give away sacks like candy on October 31st.

This hire, however, is actually pretty damn good.

Good ole boy system again.  If he was not good enough for Lovie Smith why do you think he will work here?

@ JEK2670 - Because Lovie brought his on DL coach. At least this is better than getting a fired coachfrom some other team or another one from Jacksonville's great team..
