Vital to stay with the Falcons

By D. Orlando Ledbetter

FAIRHOPE, Ala. — Falcons director of player personnel Lionel Vital, who has been with the team for six seasons, said he wasn’t getting the vacant Tampa Bay general manager’s post on Monday.

“I’m staying with the Falcons,” Vital said while scouting the offensive linemen at the South team practice at the Senior Bowl on Monday.

He’d interviewed for the vacant Tampa Bay opening.

Vital, 50, just completed his first season as the director of player personnel. He was the assistant director for the five previous seasons.

Vital replaced David Caldwell, who became Jacksonville’s general manger after the 2012 season.

Vital, a native of Loreauville, Louisiana, has also worked with Cleveland, Baltimore, the New York Jets and New England over his 23-year scouting career.

Tell him to stick around. There may be a GM opening here next year.

I don't blame him at all for trying to get out.  How would you like to have his job under Dimitroff, who thinks he's the king of evaluating players?  Just imagine a boss who thinks he's tremendously talented at player evaluation who in fact is terrible at it.  It would be unbearable to have Vital's job.

Does this mean we can look forward to having the same type of sub par personnel the falcons like to aquire during the Mike Smith, TD era?

@gfw Thank You, Thank You and Thank You! Authur should let the FALCONS FANS do the drafting this year. I'm certain the FANS can do better than Dimitroff.

I asked Ledbetter before Vital interviewed for the Tampa Bay position if he thought that he would follow the pattern of former Dimitroff lietenaunt (Snead). Les has gone in a very none Thomas way of building and running the Rams.

While John Schneider in Seattle (off the Green Bay Ted Thompson tree) took a bit longer (mostly due to QB issuess pre Wilson), his roster is so deeper and more talented than the more loudly lauded Dimitroff. So, it would be have been interesting to see if he reverted to Newsome school away from Thomas.
