Cox has players doing up-downs at the Senior Bowl

MOBILE, Ala. – New Falcons defensive line coach Bryan Cox is certainly pretty intense.

He has the linemen at the Senior Bowl doing up-downs after they make a mistake.

Some NFL personnel men shook their heads as they walked past Minnesota defensive tackle Ra’Shede Hageman doing up-downs after committing an infraction at the North practice on Wednesday.

He’s using the up-downs as a punishment drill. The player runs in place and then drop to the ground and spring back up, while keeping the feet chopping. You see this at little league fields and not normally in the NFL.

(If one of the Smyrna Spartans jump offsides they run wind sprints. If they get flagged for not having in their mouth piece, that’s 10 up-downs.)

But, the players that Cox is coaching had kind words about his coaching tactics.

Here’s what they said:

RA’SHEDE HAGERMAN, DT, MINNESOTA: “We didn’t do up-downs at Minnesota. It was more just running. It’s just Cox. He’s the coach and I’m the student. If I do something wrong and he sees it, I have to do up-downs. Obviously, I don’t want to do up-downs. So that just reinforces that lesson he’s trying to teach.”

AARON DONALD, DT, PITTSBURGH: “He’s been great. I love the way he coaches. He doesn’t let you slack at all. If there is anything that he see, he gets on you.”

So, the Falcons defensive linemen better be on point or they’ll be doing a lot of up-downs.

Garrison Smith from UGA would be a good Dl for the Falcons to get.

Maybe Cox can get Smith and Dimitroff doing ups and downs after the draft.  Without a doubt they going to make plenty of mistakes.

Two names for 'Oakleys'Dimitroff:

Knowshon Moreno,Denver Broncos Free Agent (maybe you guys could,y'know... let more than ONE back carry the ball during a game. It's called 'platooning' and bigboy football teams actually DO this...)

John Kuhn,Green Bay Packers Free Agent (250 lb Blocking FB,good receiver. Yes,If someone OTHER than the Superhero WRs are allowed to do stuff, the other teams(whispering)-wont know what we are gonna do on Every... Single.... Play..)

plus they come from winning-mindset organizations. The atmosphere at Flowery Branch must change from smiling alot, speaking the party line and kissing Blank's butt to winning football games.

We have an entire NFL coaching staff at the Senior Bowl.....and we get another Press Release for Bryan Cox. Cue the inspirational Coach Carter music.

Where's the Trailer Trash Mullet Head Avatar to stir everyone up? You could make poor Lil' Abner Bocephus say something like,'Cokx wont maek any differnce Ryyan n Flacons stil sukk...'

I have no problem with players doing updowns.  These guys aren't "professionals" yet.  Orlando.. I can't speak for the NFL, but you do see this at the High School and College level.. not just at little league fields.  You should watch an FSU practice and see what Coach Trickett has his olineman do if they make a mental mistake.  I've been to Bama, FSU, UGA, Ga Tech and Ga Southern for clinics and to watch practices.  They all have varying degrees of punishment for mental mistakes... including up downs.  This doesn't mean he will have the Falcons Dlineman doing this, but I do agree the intensity will be up under Cox.  I watched the practices on TV(couldn't see much) and I was impressed by the teaching from both Tice and Cox.  They both appear to be very much hands on, which I think is a good thing.  Man.. I was as disappointed as any fan by this past season.. but this is the story we get when the entire Falcon staff is at the Senior Bowl?  Really???

I will personally put my non-football reputation at stake and GUARANTEE Coach Cox will not be allowed to "punish" professional players while they are under contract, unless it's a rookie or undrafted rookie free agent. However, I must concur with JSSN: this is their absolute last opportunity to receive involuntary coaching. From Feb.1 onward, it's all up to them.

Last time for most of these folks truly get to be coached (in a discipline method) once they enter the league. So it has some shock value.

SF had plenty of blocking backs. I believe #48 is a free agent. Injured ankle in last game. How much did he weigh? Is he any good.

@zuzu331

You aren't going to have money for Moreno! Even if the Falcons clean house and get to $32M plus in free cap, you have bigger needs. Spend wisely!

@MummyHead Golden Corral franchisees across the state are wringing their hands and stocking up since Bryan's arrival in town...

Simply because "punitive coaching" has disappeared from the league. That is why he pointed out: "Some NFL personnel men shook their heads as they walked past Minnesota defensive tackle Ra’Shede Hageman doing up-downs after committing an infraction at the North practice on Wednesday."
