Cox wants widespread panic from quarterbacks

By D. Orlando Ledbetter

MOBILE, Ala. – New Falcons defensive line coach Bryant Cox will be charged with ramping up the pass rush.

We’ll have to stay tuned to see if the Falcons trade up to get South Carolina’s defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, who will be long gone if they sit in the No. 6 spot of the NFL draft..

The Falcons had only 32 sacks, tied for 30th with Houston last season. Only Jacksonville (31) and Chicago (31) had more.

Cox shares head coach Mike Smith’s philosophy about sacks not being the key barometer of the pass rush.

He subscribes to the widespread panic approach to affecting the quarterback.

“If you can make the quarterback move his feet and get him off the spot, a lot of times that creates errant throws and that creates interceptions, turnovers and panic,” Cox said. “So, I would agree that sacks are not necessarily always the thing you strive for. I think the biggest thing is that you want to affect the quarterback. You want to make him know and understand and feel that you’re are around at all times.”

Under Smith, the Falcons have averaged 31.2 sacks preseason and have never been ranked in the top 10 in the league. (See chart below).

Cox, when he was the defensive line coach with Cleveland in 2009, had a top 10 finish. The Browns had 40 sacks and ranked eighth in the league.

I'm almost sick of Mike Smith's insanity. He knows x and o's ok. Why doesn't he ever step outside his comfort zone and grow. It's the same year after year.

Mike smith and cox are sending the wrong message to our defense. They're saying just getting in the quarterback's face is good enough, and you'll get paid as long as you do that ( kroy beirman, Babs, and anyone with long arms and a big frame.) WORRILOW is a stud, we need more like him.

The proof will be in the pudding, If the Falcons can manufacture forty sacks then we can say B Cox is coaching these guys up. As a fan you want to see some improvement.

What? Why should the QBs when all they have to do is run, run, run the ball down their throat!

Looks like MS hired another coach under his thumb.

LOL!  Well, he knows what he wants, LOL!  What he delivers will be marketly different, regardless of who he might get in the draft!   I don't see any NFC South QB being in fear of the falcan't pass rush for years to come.

This is the worst front 7 in the league in terms of talent and it's not remotely close.

This is not a new story.   It's interesting that "affect the QB"  is the buzz phrase and has been for several years,  you know who doesn't have to answer questions about whether sacks matter or not?

Teams that have talent,   aren't being asked questions about why the Seattle and San Francisco defenses can "affect the QB" because they are talented enough to do that.

This teams talent is hot garbage in the front 7 and everyone knows it.

For Offensive line problems,  See Defensive Front 7   The talent is hot garbage.

you’re are around at all times." ????? If I am saying that correctly, you are are around at all times.....Did Cox really say that?

Cox should have told that to the opposing defenses, maybe we would not have given up so many sacks if they had know that all they need to do is get Ryan to move his feet.  Opposing defenses seemed to enjoy getting sacks and our offense was way too obliging.

OK and where is he going to get these pass rushers from, at the corner stop and go

If Cox is speaking of Matt Ryan he may be correct. If he is speaking of Aaron Rodgers, it won't work.

@SeenThatB4 Do you think anyone saw the rapid improvement of the defense for the team in Louisiana coming?

I did, for one. And i see next year's falcan't defense not improving much from where they were this year.
