Clemson QB Tajh Boyd has stellar Pro Day showing

By D. Orlando Ledbetter

CLEMSON, S.C. – Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd was spectacular in his scripted workout on the school’s Pro Day on Thursday.

He completed 66 of 67 passes while throwing to wide receivers Sammy Watkins, Martavis Bryant and running back Rod McDowell.

“That was an impressive display,” St. Louis general manager Les Snead said.

The Falcons were represented by scouts Billy Devaney and Anthony Robinson.

Boyd is considered a fifth-round pick and developmental quarterback by NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock.

“He’s got arm talent and you’re either born with it or you’re not,” Mayock said. “Tajh Boyd has some arm talent. He’s athletic. The ball came out beautifully today. I thought he really threw it well. But I knew that.”

Mayock believes that a team could draft Boyd and develop him over a couple of seasons. He compared Boyd to former Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith.

“The things he has to improve on, you’re not really going to see at a Pro Day,” Mayock said. “It’s more of the pocket awareness. When to scramble? When to step up? Those are the things that I think he has to work on and he can only do that over time.”

In addition to Snead, Jets head coach Rex Ryan and Lions head coach Jim Caldwell along with Jets general manager John Idzik and Lions general manager Martin Mayhew were amongst the group of 60 scouts.

He might have put on a show, but look at the headline picture.  Notice his hand on top of the ball as he "winds up".  Not good.  Too slow.  Too many moving parts.

Watkins and Austin, whew that's scary! Even with Sam Bradford throwing to them it is scary!

They were all there to see two players: Martavis Bryant and Boyd. All Watkins needed to do was smile and give smart answers during the private meetings. They know all they need to know about him at this point. For Boyd, this was just his personal showing in order for him to be drafted. Anything less and he's an undrafted FA.
