Wide receiver Kevin Cone’s time with the Falcons is over.

The former Georgia Tech player who walked onto the team after transferring from NAIA Shorter College was one of two exclusive rights free agents and he did not received a tender offer from the team, according to NFLPA documents.

He is now an unrestricted free agent.

Wide receiver Drew Davis did receive a tender offer of $570,000.

The Falcons signed Cone, a St. Pius High grad and the son of former Tech player Ronnie Cone, in 2011 after he started 10 games as a senior for the Jackets and reportedly ran the 40-yard dash in 4.37 seconds at Tech’s pro day.

Cone made the practice squad and was added to the active roster in Dec. 2011.

In 2012, Cone was active for 12 games but did not play any offensive snaps.

Last season, despite a rash of injuries, Cone couldn’t crack the lineup and saw Darius Johnson past him on the depth chart.

Overall, he played in 28 games, mostly on special teams. He had one career catch for 12 yards.

I like Cone very much. Realize we don't know what Cone is capable of as a player because Smith gave him very little playing time. We do know he has the physical tools. He's as fast as Julio, 0.2 inches shorter and 4 lbs lighter than Julio, lifted 225 lbs 3 more times than Julio. 37 inch vs Julio's 38 inch vertical. Lots of practice as a blocker under the Ga Tech offensive scheme. His physical attributes are much better than Davis's. But Cone needs playing time to see his potential. From what little I saw in two preseasons, I thought he had lots of potential.

@ JSSN , no electronic timing ok so its 4.38 then still the 3rd fastest.. Learn to run a receiver tree really are you serious? Do you think pro players much like 85 pound  rec players don't race against each other at practice. That's why they have an ATM machine at the falcon complex.

You can't keep receivers around if you're not going to use them. Seattle found a way to use their 6th wide out (Lockette). The Falcons are locked in with Jones, White, Douglas, Davis, and now Johnson. Cone would really benefit with time in Canada. Learning to run receiver trees is important, he's one dimensional right now.

From what I know "reportedly" ran  4.37, come on  DLed do a little fact checking. He was the 3d  fastest guy on the team. He even filled in at DB in practice on occasion.

A truly great story of perseverance and fulfilling a dream. At St Pius X, Shorter, and GT they all ran the wing T and to play in that kind of offense make a NFL team truly a Herculean effort on this mans part.

Oh yes he graduated from Tech and is in grad school while playing in the NFL.

And finally a little know fact for most of last season GT had more wide outs in the NFL than UGA just a little bonus fact for the readers out there.

When did you stop caring about your job?

"they have an ATM machine at the falcon complex."

You do know the difference between hand starting mechanisms and fully automatic electronic signal digital photo timing?

@BigIrishMike

I know this is going to go right over your head, the difference between electronic timing and hand starting mechanisms can be worth nearly 7/10ths.

I like Cone, but he is  benefitting from being the 6th receiver and special teams player on this team. In Canada he can learn passing games beyond the old Air Coryell system that the Falcons are tied to the hip with. Go ask Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery the benefits of someone who has spent some time in the Canadian game can be for a receiver (the name Marc Trestman mean anything to you?). You can in all honesty having watched Cone think he runs precise or close to adequate routes? Simple as this, see exactly who takes a flyer on him now that he is a unrestricted free agent.

Route running matters, the Falcons have taken two receivers off the street twice during Cone's time with the Falcons. That shouldn't happen with his "speed" and time on the roster. I wish him well.

Pro Days aren't electronic timing. I really like Cone; but you're doing him no favors.

'You do know the difference between hand starting mechanisms and fully automatic electronic signal digital photo timing?'Who talks like that? You are hereby pronounced blog champion of  fully automatic electronic signal digital photo timing knowledge.

@Esquire @Hemmorid_Sufferer_2  Providing, accurate and complete information IS his job. You may see it as trivial, but I see it as a failure.

I can only guess the reason he loves it is there is no pressure to do an adequate job.

"Who talks like that?"

Someone who knows, compared to someone who doesn't.

He's worrying about Cone's 40 time, but it never translated to the field. Do you understand that? Go away little fella, this is not your fight.

Then you need to start reading the and commenting on the MyAJC. They proof that one. You just sound sordid like MummyHead about what he does or does not pay attention to in his work. I got over it within 3 months of visiting commenting on the AJC Online 1.0 (that was nearly a decade ago). You're taking on the character of a sound garden, that is not a good thing. Correct him and move on, the personal stuff is just silly, he's not a blogger.
