FILM REVIEW: Cosell critiques Soliai and Jackson

By D. Orlando Ledbetter

The affable Greg Cosell, a NFL Films Senior Producer, does a wonderful job breaking down film of players.

In the “Film Room” series on the Philadelphia Eagles website, Cosell and Bo Wulf did an episode titled “Film Room: Free agents on the D-Line.”

They reviewed two of the Falcons signees, defensive tackle Paul Soliai and defensive end Tyson Jackson.

“He’s a true nose tackle,” Cosell said of Soliai.

He was not as high on Jackson as he doesn’t believe he’ll give the Falcons much of a pass rush because he’s not very quick.

Tyson Jackson is on the Falcons team to do the dirty work and stop the run. They already new he wasn't the best pass rusher.

Cap Space???

Did Falcons shoot their load?

Or just laying low, letting the mkt settle?

Falcons need sign another OT.

Anthony Collins is still available this would be a perfect free agent if Falcons can bring him home.

GO FALCONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They could trade Hoolio Jones and the number one draft pick over the next 8 years to get Jadevon Clowney, then listen to some broadcaster say six times every game, "The Falcons sure gave up a lot to get the man that just missed tackling the (RB, QB, WR on end around ...) guy who led to a score."  Change their name to the Atlanta Mice, so everyone knows it stands for the best laid plans that always fail

Now get ready to trade up for Jadeveon Clowney,

because he wants to play for Atlanta and Clowney is VERY QUICK !

If they are indeed going to base 3-4, then I think this sets them up great for the draft.  They can get a Mack of Barr in round one (not great fits for the 4-3) and it should end the speculation about trading for Clowney.  Then, get an OT in round two (like Richardson from Tenn, or James in Round 3) to help out the line.  I think this puts them in a good position moving forward.

We didn't sign Jackson to be a pass rusher. We signed both these guys with the intention to get tougher along the D-line and stop the run better than we did last season. Pass rusher will come in the draft IMO

Jackson doesn't need to rush the passer.  That's not why we signed him, nor is it why the Chiefs drafted him in the first place.

He is a run stopper and an ideal 3-4 DE.  His job is to clog lanes and occupy blockers, making the plays that come to him.

Both Soliai and Jackson are large run stoppers and their huge size up front  should help the linebackers.

The falcan'ts over-reached on both these signings, not to mention, overpaid.   Can you say: Mediocrity for luxurious prices?  Go ahead, say with me:  "Mediocre signings!"

GEAUX SAINTS!!!!

@tyger

"..back-of-the-envelope calculations put the team in the $4 – 6 million range in terms of available cap space.  The team can carve out more if Roddy White’s $6.3 million hit is restructured and Osi Umenyiora takes a pay cut ($4.75m current salary) or is released, clearing $3.5 million in space."

Collins is a decent NFL Tackle.

He's not better than Albert, Monroe or Valdeer.

@SeenThatB4 Before you judge again, which I admit; the upper falcons management has made some bonehead draft moves. Furthermore, they have spent too much money on has been players. Now, the Aints are in the same boat my New Orleans rival. Lets start talking about the Aints and how they don't have the players that got them that Super Bowl win. Let see if you guys can every get a win against Seattle like the Falcons did in 2012.

Go The Taints !!!!!!

@BigCrimson75 I have seen him play very solid player, would be the best OL on this team if sign.

Numbers don't lie check the chart

GO FALCONS!!!!!!!!!!

@BigCrimson75 I would love to have Watkins...  But we need to draft another OLB (for the 3-4) that can cover and rush the QB.  Mack or Barr

@BigCrimson75 I like Sammy Watkins but we don't have a HOLE at WR(yet) but we do at pass rusher and OT. Plus this being the deepest draft for WR's in the history of the NFL draft(as many on tv say), it would be dumb to burn a top ten pick there.

@BigCrimson75

Most teams take the best person available if they did not have so many holes. I would co-sign but we still got holes man. I see if your scenario plays out, the Falcons will trade the pick and stock up...not saying it is smart ( because Watkins is an ABSOLUTE BEAST and he would look nice in black and red) but I think these guys would get laid out if they choose Watkins with the 6th pick. IMO.

Dawggoneit......Are we friends on the college blogs? Honest question....most of your ilk hate me(btw, for no reason)!

You take Watkins for multiple reasons:

-Jules & Roddy are FA's after this yr

-Jules & Roddy were both hurt last yr

-Harry Douglass is garbage

-Jules is hurt every yr

-Watkins is the best offensive player in draft

------

This idea of QB's going early is a smokescreen. This ain't last yrs draft!! Lots more talent to choose from.

Hypothetical scenario for the top 5 picks:

1. Clowney

2. QB

3. Matthews

4. Robinson

5. Mack

If the Falcons are choosing from Lewan, Barr, Watkins, Donald, Mosely, etc. in this scenario....I'm taking Watkins!!

@falconfever @BigCrimson75  You guys are nuts for wanting another WR. Receiver is not a problem in Atlanta and won't be for the foreseeable future. Defense and O-line is what we need. Particularly pass rushers and lots of them. You can never have enough pass rushers. We were 31st in the league in sacks last season. We simply do not put enough pressure on opposing QB's and when you can't put pressure on the QB, that puts pressure on your secondary to get exposed.

I don't care if you have Deion Sanders, Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas, and Ronnie Lott back there. If you can't put pressure on the QB, they will be picked apart.
