The Falcons agreed to a one-year deal with returner/nickel back Javier Arenas on Tuesday, his Atlanta-based agent Hadley Engelhard told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The team announced the deal later.

Arenas, a former star at Alabama, was drafted in the second-round (50th overall) by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2010 draft. Falcons assistant general manager Scott Pioli was Kansas City’s general manager at the time.

Arenas, 26, who played three seasons with the Chiefs was with Arizona last season. He’s played in 63 games and has made 12 starts.

Arenas has 106 career NFL punt returns for 1,029 yards (9.7 per return) and 74 kickoff returns for 1,568 yards (21.2 yards per return).

With the Falcons looking to spruce up their return game, they also met with former Chicago Bears returner Devin Hester on Tuesday and with Trindon Holliday over the weekend. Holliday went on to sign a one-year contract with the New York Giants.

Hester, 31, who played at the University of Miami, had expressed a desire to play for the Miami Dolphins.

Hester led the league in kickoff return yardage last season and was used in a limited role as a punt returner.

Jacquizz Rodgers handled the kickoff return duties last season and Robert McClain was the main punt returner. The Falcons finished 10th in kickoff-return average (24.4 yards) and 20th in punts (8.2 yards) in 2013.

The dangerous Hester has returned 13 punts and five kickoffs for touchdowns over his career.

Holliday, a three-year veteran speedster, has two punts and two kickoffs for touchdowns.

Trade up for Jadeveon Clowney to torment the opposing QB's.

Sign whoever is needed to keep Rogers on the bench. They lost Tate to some foolishness the the captain, now mess around with Hester. Come on!

Stockpiling players from another mediocre franchise- in this case KC- can be a slippery slope. I like the addition of Pioli to keep Dimitroff in check but am not in favor of signing a slew of his old players who had less success as a team than we did.

Roll Tide - Arenas can play some football. Great athlete...

Arenas' stats listed in the article look pretty good to me. Two stones with one bird people!

Some of the folks here need to go get a job managing a football team and run it into the ground.

One more year of Dmitroff and Smitty. Is that the best you can do at punt returner when Devin Hester was available.

Yes, the Falcons signed 3 from Kansas City.  Big deal!  They have two on the current roster that played for the Giants.  Gasp! Two!  Nobody complained about Kansas City when we brought in Tony G. Let's move on..

@STBF.. The Saints should change their helmets to Sewer Yellow, as in the filthiest city in America. It suits their city, it's just too a lot of the sewer rats moved here to dirty up our city. Or, their helmet should say Cheats or Sympathy Winners...Go Falcons!

He's got some moves. Just because it wasn't Hester doesn't make this a bad move. We needed help in the return game. We got it with Javier Arenas.

Surely we wanted Hester, but we wouldn't give him more than a 1-year contract, and he wouldn't take that.  End of story.  We end up with more money and less talent.  Sound familiar?

Teams should come to threads like this to find a real GM. I mean, THESE ppl know the game inside and out smh

Im trying to be positive and hopeful but compared to what other upper end teams got it seems like Falcons are getting cannon fodder

The Falcons needed someone to come in  and fill the return void. Plus this guy can play Nichol if need be. I think their trying to have more depth in every position. Let's see what they do moving forward, I don't think this is going to be the Kansas City way....

Maybe the falcan'ts will change the insignia on their helmets this year and replace the current one with an arrowhead with ATL inscribed in it.   Seems appropriate, they got the colors already set

GEAUX SAINTS!!!.

Yes me also concern about signing every ex Chief player.

Why is he signing every ex player from same team, SMH

Can coach Smith and TD ever think out of box and make adjustment among the team.

Alford should play safety specially with his style of play.

GO FALCONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

devounknown1000

Signing Antonio Cromartie would make this defense a more aggressive team, also being able to play more man coverage.

Cromartie is a lock down corner.

CROMARTIE, MOORE, ALFORD, TRUFANT

Alford would be able to play more free allowing him to become a play maker.

GO FALCONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@SlimDem

No I think Dmitroff did I fine job of that last year after football experts everywhere said they needed to address both lines.  He drafted two corners, Stansly Maponga and Maliciah Goodman and released several of the starting O-line.  I guess those moves looked pretty good to you too on the way to 4-12.  Ask yourself why is Kroy Biermann still on this team making 3 million a year and is injured and was not even very productive last year?  No we are not NFL gm just fans who know enough about football not to buy into everything we are being sold!

Maybe the falcan'ts should change their helmets to a picture of Sean Payton, since he owns them.

@DawgGoneIt

He averages less per kick off return that the Falcons had last year and 1.3 yards better per punt return. You want to tell me how this is an upgrade????

Because of 3 players? That percentage doesnts add up

DCDirtyBird

The only concern right now should be edge rushers. As it stands...it appears that we are looking to fill that hole with the draft and in house players. Don't be surprised if Massaquoi blossoms in the 3-4. Not guaranteeing he will...but he just might.

ATLDEN218
ATLDEN218

How we received 2 key pieces to stop the run game a considerable upgrade at the gaurd position and an upgrade in the return game?? You need to understand how much cap room we will have next season its ridiculous TD and scott are geniuses in the front office let them do what needs to be done

ATLDEN218

He would want to much money and robert alford needs to play CB thats what hes best at

Dman

@UGA76 - falcons only have 4 line backers and need 1 starter. We also only have 1 starting safety so we need another starter unless you think we will play backups again at those two positions. Didn't work too well last season. We can draft lineman at the 3-5 rounds...

@DCDirtyBird Agreed, but getting another O-Tackle and edge rushers are needed..hard to do both at this point, but keeping my fingers crossed.

RogerHenslee

@ATLDEN218 no doubt some upgrades to one of the worst O-line and D-lines in football. But again what I said was better teams(Denver, pats etc) did much better. Take a look at the Vegas odds on Falcons getting to the super bowl before and after free agency. The Odds went from 25-1 before signing the upgrades to 33-1 now. This means experts feel we have gotten worst as a favorite to win the superbowl? Not because the Falcs haven't upgraded, but that that the better teams got even more better.

I wasn't talking about STB4 "recycling that same sentence over and over again." It is your fried-brain: "Toilet blah, blah, blah, etc...Mess! Look female dog impersonator, when you "mind" your own "business," then say something. Your pitiful screen name wasn't even in the thread. Of course your bad and tired shtick act stuck its nose in it! 'Shame' was a helluva movie, go rent it! Oh, learn how to use a comma or a period!

@JSSN Learn to mind your own business old man. If you are looking for an altercation with me again in the form of seeking attention, you won't have my valuable time. Time and time again, I continue to poke fun at you, your joke of a career and your background but yet you are still shameless enough to continue posting on here. You are an old man but your maturity level is that of a teenager. If you have any sense of shame left within yourself, you won't direct or reply to any of my posts ever again. Peace out!
