Falcons release fullback Bradie Ewing

By D. Orlando Ledbetter

Falcons released injury-prone fullback Bradie Ewing on Friday.

Falcons released injury-prone fullback Bradie Ewing on Friday.

Bradie Ewing, who was injury-prone with the Falcons, was released by the team on Friday.

Ewing, 24, was selected by the Falcons in the fifth-round (157th overall) of the 2012 NFL draft.

Ewing, 6-foot and 239 pounds, appeared in two games last season before being placed on injured reserved on Sept. 16 with a separated shoulder.

In 2012, Ewing had a strong training camp going until he suffered a knee injury in the exhibition season opener against Baltimore.

Ewing was injured on special teams. He went down with 6:56 remaining in the first quarter on the Ravens’ second punt of the game. After being helped from the field, Ewing was taken to the locker room on a cart and did not return.

He missed his entire rookie season, but came back strong after that offseason.

Before the injury, the Falcons were counting on Ewing to replace former Pro Bowler Ovie Mughelli. The position has been in a state of flux over the past two seasons. Mike Cox ended up being the main fullback in 2012 and last season Patrick DiMarco held the job.

Last season, the Falcons were confident enough in Ewing’s rehab that they did not extend a tender offer to Cox, who could have served as an insurance policy.

Ewing showed some pass-catching ability and the Falcons were hoping that he could serve as a lead-blocker.

Who could have predicted that #34 Bradie Ewing would be injured two consecutive years and that both injuries would require surgery and be season ending ? Not the Falcons, not Mike Smith, and certainly not Bradie Ewing. From a historic point he was never seriously injured at Wisconsin in his career.

We all understand the NFL is " Big Business", we in Wisconsin have a football team too. and follow them too.s

Bradie Ewing is a " class act" and will be difficult to replace. But as a former neighbor of the Ewing family, its disappointing to see the release. We are hopeful another team will see how he has rehabbed to get back in to great physical shape and we also hope that more teams will take a look at his skills and see the potential there.

He and Rachel will land on their feet and move forward in life. Its in their blood.

Best wishes to the Ewing's.

We are very proud of you and wish you many years of life's success.

We too thank the Falcons organization for believing in Bradie as his whole community did as well.

UGA needs new basketball coaches all around I am tired of the on and done barely winning prorams. They need to make power moves and bring in some new blood no disrespect to the coaches that are there but enough is enough.  Calling on the Director to makea power move.  Andy has been there forever with no national championship.  It's time to retire.

Its not like this move was out of left field.  Ewing might have been a good football player, but he was made of glass and was more fragile than an antique vase when he put on the pads.

He was actually showing a little promise until he got injured week 2 against the Rams. The year before it was against Baltimore in the preseason. The guy has never been able to stay healthy and when you have a person that is on IR all the time (see Kerry Meier) then what good is he on your team? Patrick DiMarco started to come on really strong at fullback last season and I expect him to be the starter unless we wanna grab one in the later rounds like J.C. Copeland from LSU or Kiero Small from Arkansas.

In March 2017, the falcan'ts will be cutting the guy they draft in the first round this year.

If they can pay a guy $3Mil a year to stand in the end zone and watch balls go over his head(Hester) why can't they at least give the kid one more chance to prove his self. I mean how many chances has Baker gotten?I am really starting to wonder about the front office!!!!

This really stinks for this kid. He was going to be our starting fullback for years to come and now, he is on the street looking for a job like millions of other Americans. Good luck Bradie...

This move also makes me a little sad. I had just met Bradie's family in the stands right before his injury against Baltimore. What great folks, all wearing Ewing T shirts,  who had flown in from Nebraska just for the exhibition game. I hope he is healthy enough to get a shot with another NFL team.

I'm sad that he was never healthy. Unfortunately they weren't as wise in other places regarding the injury prone.

@SeenThatB4  That is one asinine comment from a troll who is secretly a Falcons' fan. For you to hate the Falcons so much, you seem to read and comment on each and every article posted on the website. See, as a member of the Falcons nation, I would never waste my time reading an article about the Saints in a Louisiana newspaper. Why? Because my concern is my own team. Also, you argument is invalid based solely off facts and past trends. Thomas Dimitroff has been our GM since 2008. So in 6 drafts, the top choice he made in all the drafts are still currently on our roster. Can the Saints claim that? As a matter of fact, the Saints 1st rd picks in the 06',07',08',09' are all wearing a different color jersey. So, you as a "So-called" Saints fan, should be worried about their draft choices. No need to sweat us, if you want to be on the Falcon's band wagon, we'll make room.

@ATLFan  Bradie's parents live in Richland Center, Wisconsin and they are wonderful people as is Bradie, Falcon's loss. Bradie has a great academic record and will do well in life whether he plays football or finds another career. He has the brains and attitude of a champion!

@Bdavi104 @SeenThatB4  Why even respond? That's what he wants you to do. He comes on here to troll and get on your nerves. If he comes here and fails in doing so, it'll be like he's not even here so why bother? He will quit eventually once he realizes nobody is really falling for his antics any longer. That's what trolls do.

@Bdavi104 @SeenThatB4  Never argue with a fool, after awhile people cannot tell the difference.  If you want SeenThatB4 gone, quit responding.  They are doing it to piss you off, and you fall into their little trap. They were gone when the Aints went thru the Bounty Scandal,  soon it will the salary cap that will put the AInts where they belong, in the basement.

@JSSN @stillchillen No doubt Baker has been hurt a lot, but just for accuracy sake,  According to NFL.com and Fox Sports in 2008 as a rookie Baker started 5 games and played in 8.  He did not miss 15 games.

@JSSN @stillchillen Even the games he played our opponents tossed him around like a ragdoll. Thankfully for him the rest of the line was so bad he looked good in comparison.

@DawgGoneIt @Bdavi104 @SeenThatB4    Guys calm down.  SeenThatB4 would post to New Orleans newspaper but alas no one in that god foresaken city can READ. He is a minor irritation that will disappear like a fart in the wind when the Saints drop to 2-4 next year. So just let him be. Sitting in his pjs with a SAINTS helmet on his head and a cork on his fork.
