Umenyiora will return in 2014, no restructured deal

By D. Orlando Ledbetter

Falcons defensive end/linebacker Osi Umenyiora will return for his second season with the team. (D. Orlando Ledbetter/dledbetter@ajc.com)

Falcons defensive end Osi Umenyiora no longer has to endure uncertainty for next season.

Umenyiora will return and no restructure of his contract is planned, according to general manager Thomas Dimitroff. Also, defensive end Kroy Biermann will be back and there is no restructure planned for his contract, either.

There was one of those unsourced reports that the team wanted him to take a pay cut.

The Falcons were pleased with Umenyiora’s mentorship of the young defensive ends last season. As the team’s playoff hopes slipped away, Umenyiora moved into a designated pass rusher role.

Here’s a column from Jeff Schultz on Thomas Dimitroff (subscription required).

Umenyiora has a salary cap number of $4.75 million and a base salary of $2.5 million for 2014.

Biermann, who’s coming back from torn Achilles tendon surgery, has a salary cap number of $4.08 and a base salary of $3.05 million for 2015.

Umenyiora, 32, signed a two-year, $8.5 million contract with the Falcons on March 28. He hopes to return next season. He played his first nine seasons in the league with the New York Giants, where he was on two Super Bowl winning teams and was a two-time Pro Bowler.

“I’m a team guy, especially right now,” Umenyiora said. “For the team, I don’t think it’s been quite as good this year. Hopefully, we can get this thing corrected next year. But for me, you know, I just didn’t help this team (enough). Right now, my whole focus is going in there and doing the best I can.”

Umenyiora said he plans to focus on rushing from both the right and left sides, although he’s mostly been used from the right side for most of his career.

Against Washington, Massaquoi played 58 of 68 defensive snaps (86 percent). While rookie defensive ends Malliciah Goodman (27) and Stansly Maponga (10 snaps) got some action, too.

“It was not a demotion,” Smith insisted. “I basically wanted to put him on a pitch count in terms of number of snaps.”

With main free agent signee Paul Soliai, a defensive tackle, clogging up the middle, Umenyiora and Biermann should have more one-on-one rush opportunities when the Falcons are in their 4-3 and 3-4 defensive alignments.

The Falcons will likely play their stouter ends, Tyson Jackson, Jonathan Massaquoi, Malliciah Goodman in run situations. Also, Peria Jerry and Jonathan Babibeaux, 4-3 tackles and have also been used as ends in the 3-4.

The Falcons are not switching the 3-4. They have already been running it for the past two seasons.

Peria Jerry's performance over the past few seasons should have already made him expendable..

Now go structure a contract for Jadeveon Clowney, that defense needs help immediately.

JSSN   I don't know Real Housewives of Atlanta, that may be my problem..  I assume it is a TV show.  Our TV does not come on till about 9pm unless there is a sporting event.  We did try and watch that Dancing with the Celeb's once and only lasted 8 minutes.

JSSN....Followed all the discussions below and it was interesting.  Can't always say that about this blog that sometimes goes over the cliff.  But you stumped me on something; who is Nene Leeks?  And how does Kroy's wife effect his play, is she some crooked DeKalb County employee or dysfunctional  Atlanta school administrator?  If so, then I understand.

I think they should have cut there ties with one of these guys ... Osi is really one dementional and when they run at him horrible ... Kroy is not an elite pass rusher and I don't know why we keep talking about letting him play LB ... I hope they complete this defense or we will be in for the same type of season last year no matter how many weapons they have on Offense...

No surpise here..This is the same team that decided to reup Peria Jerry.

Lots of old and familiar names, which will lead to the same poor results the falcan'ts garnered last year!

Osi is the best defensive player on the roster!

Que the SB games.

I really think both should have taken a pay cut. We have seen the best of Osi. Biermann has never produced warranting such a contract. With this emphasis on the 3-4 we shall see if I'm wrong, Bman will have 1 on 1 opportunities, I'm thinking this will be their last year.

What kind of info/pics does Kroy have over Falcon's brass that has them keep this bum on the team?

Nothing is "simple" in the World of the "(Fake) Real Housewives of Atlanta!" I'm busy fixing my Mother's favorite for her birthday dinner after serving her breakfast this morning! My fiancé flew in, and the last thing on my timeline today is Falcons wives (or exes). NeNe Leakes, it ain't that important!

BigCrimson75

Quagmire.....The show is popular. Personally, I don't watch it. You see one episode, you've seen em all. #71 happens to be married to blonde bimbo on the show. She's an awful excuse for a human being. That might be harsh, but it's also the truth.

Ask Big Crimson, he brought Falcons players funky wives into the mix. It's NeNe Leakes, do a web search. Not wasting time trying to explain that mess!

@CedricJohnson  Kroy's not elite, no. And he probably never will be. But not everyone on every defense is going to be elite. Sometimes you have those non-stop motor players who will make plays. Kroy is that guy. His motor never quits. You will never see Kroy lagging behind! He chased Vick down in the 4th quarter in Philly 2 seasons ago!

DawgGoneIt
DawgGoneIt

@Rick_James  You don't know if Jerry will still be on the roster come training camp. Just because he was signed doesn't mean he'll be on the final 53 man roster. Still gotta make it through training camp and all the cuts/roster trimmings before the beginning of September. Plus depending on who we draft, it could make Jerry expendable.

Before some scrub, runs off at the keyboard, Big Crimson is right. Osi is the best talent on that defense. Unfortunately even with the additions, it is still a flawed entity.

Who, J.J. Watt? Unless Strahan is going to come out of retirement and make Osi accountable (a craft he taught Justin Tuck), that is not really true.

@EJJ65

If they aren't going to restructure White and Blalock in the foreseeable future; then it is a signal they are going into the season status quo.

Osi, Biermann, and Weatherspoon will be playing out their deals Whatever rookies or 2nd year players on the rosters will fill out the roster. Biggest news is Julio Jones is playing this season for his next deal!

"Sometimes you have those non-stop motor players who will make plays. Kroy is that guy. His motor never quits. You will never see Kroy lagging behind!"

Say what? Well at least he hustles, head bowed in memory of DeCoud!

If Biermann's actual talent matched his motor, he'd be hellified! But it doesn't!

I'll give him that he is a hustle player and gives his all ...

No, I'm right.

Let's get another 16(hopefully more) outta True before crowning him.

Osi is the best pass rusher we got.....by miles actually.

There's no guarantee we land Barr, Mack or Clowney in the draft.

We might very well go OT, TE & S in the first 3 rounds.

@JSSN @EJJ65 A lot of guys playing out there deals in 2104.  Over 20 FA's next season. In addition to the one's listed by JSSN you have  White, Rodgers, McClain..Bryant.. plus.a bunch of the 1yr guys like Peters and Jerry. A lot of money coming off the books.  A lot of guys potentially playing for their NFL careers in 2014.

#71 is the worst football player I've ever seen in a Falcons Jersey......and that list ain't short! :(

He's pathetic. He's worthless. Look who he's married too.....tells you everything ya need to know.

@RogerHenslee @DawgGoneIt

Roger, that goes right past him. We're not christening him an "elite" player, but a team so devoid of playmakers; he's not that bad. We agree on Weatherspoon, it is amazing the loyalty to what "he was suppose to be!"

RogerHenslee
RogerHenslee

@JSSN @DawgGoneIt And I believe the topic was Osi was the best defense player currently on the Falcons.

Not maybe, has potential, could've-should've.

I cant argue with you JSSN.

Potential sells for a dime  a dozen and I sure hope Trufant lives up to that, but once upon a time that applied to glass jaw Weatherspoon!.

And best on the Falcons defense isn't actually as flattering as it may at first seem.

Sure do hope Osi can have a positive impact on some of the young DE's,

JSSN

@DawgGoneIt

 @JSSN

You should know Ronnie Lott is the only "rookie" corner to ever be named a "first team AP All-Pro squad { since the merger. Revis should have been as well as Charles WoodsonYou go and look at their numbers! Do you not see the difference?

What is truly sad about when people like you start blogging (in the AJC Football arena), you have no internal filter. Even Big Crimson who wrote something really nasty thing about me personally once upon a time had the good sense to reel that stuff back. Now it is pretty much all football between us. I can't advice you or even comment to you, because you've a chip so far up you, your vision of life (not just the NFL) is severely obtuse.You might not see it, you think your attacks hurt. Nah, I wouldn't give you the satisfaction.

I've spent the last 4 hours enjoying my Mother's 75th birthday party. Today was the day that my older Brother died 20 years ago at 8PM. Now read re-read your little diatribe again and think about it.

They name an All-Rookie team every year. Name the 2012 All-Rookie corners? Now read your statement about Trufant, he can easily become Casey Hayward. Heard the same hooey about Weatherspoon in 2009, now here we are. You are still pushing that and the rest of the football has move on. potential unfilled, that is what it is.Not because he's not talented, but because of the nature game. Last year, all of the comments from people like you were"Oh they have a season under the scheme, it will only get better!" Now adding talent to just segment of the equation (run stopping is suppose to make all things "Light years" better (why scream?)! Wow, it is "Dream Team II!" OK, I'm exaggerating, much like you folks! You're getting to the level of what an average defense should try to do, run stop.

Sorry, you can have your opinion. But each time, over and over again ranting by folks like you (declaring my lack of football fandom or knowledge) has let me fairly unscathed at the end of each football season. Why? I understand the dynamics of the issues, simple as that.

DawgGoneIt
DawgGoneIt

@JSSN @DawgGoneIt  How many rookie corners make All-Pro in their rookie years? Go ahead, I'll wait. Every rookie is going to get burned. It happens. But he made more good plays than bad. So did Alford who I believe has a huge upside as well. Both Trufant and Alford have huge upsides.

As far as Moore and Weatherspoon, you can quit it with the other teams gameplan to get at them. Those guys are the two most talented guys on our defense and for you to sit there and deny it is very foolish on your part.

You're not even a fan of the Falcons or football in general for that matter! So what's it to ya? You probably sit at home and do nothing all day! The Falcons will be LIGHTYEARS's better on defense this year than in year's past! Nolan finally has the pieces to run his 3-4 defense that he WANTED to run from the START!

JSSN
JSSN

@DawgGoneIt

It is like you don't even watch what teams do when they play the Falcons. You folks need to learn from that propagandized rhetoric from 2010 about "Pro Bowl" this and "Speed" 2nd to none" stuff! Does Jimmy Graham (I hate to mention him because you folks have "Saints-steria) running down the deep seam not register with you? I won't mention the embarrassment of what he did to them in the Dome last season. Teams game plan to get at Moore and Weatherspoon, not to avoid them! Carolina has spent two straight seasons trying tailor their TE patterns and zone-reads to get those two! The Saints on the other hand, motion Graham to Spoon' side regardless of the situation!

Trufant was "All-Rookie." So what? That's not All-Pro? he had decent back end of 2014. But he was bailed out twice by the hustle of Alford when was burned! Does he have potential? Cover yes, but he's not going to be a press cover that some of you are mistakenly deluding yourself into believe. You better get a serious pass rush in the next 2 seasons, or you will find out what happens to cover corners who are not strong enough to truly press and jam at the line of scrimmage!

DawgGoneIt
DawgGoneIt

@JSSN @DawgGoneIt  Why can't I drop Trufant's name in the mix? I wasn't going to say him but even if I did it wouldn't be blasphemous. He was named to the All-Rookie team last season and played very well as a rookie on an average-bad defense. He'll be a Pro Bowler in the future.

To me, it's between Weatherspoon and Moore. Weatherspoon's speed is 2nd to none when it comes to linebackers. He can hunt and chase and brings tenacity to our defense when healthy. If he could just stay healthy, that's the point. But when healthy, he IMO is our best defensive player. I say that because when he's out, our defense takes a hit. That usually happens when the best you have goes out.

You COULD make a case for William Moore with his hitting ability and his coverage skills aren't awful. He brings an added physical presence not only to our secondary but to our entire team. Did you see the hits he's laid on people? He sets the tone. If we didn't have him, IMO our defense would have no one that striked fear into the opposing team. When teams play us, they know that if you go across the middle, Willy Mo will be there!

JSSN
JSSN

@DawgGoneIt

Who? Moore, he cannot cover in space and has to have everything in front of him and don't let a fast receiver or running back have a step, it's over!

Weatherspoon? Even you can't be that much of a blind homer. Can't stay healthy and he gets his hat handed  to him in the running and passing game.

Babineaux? This is not 2011, he still balls, but his next level days are behind him, not in front of him (like Osi but Osi still shows some dynamic push). Go look at the 49ers go ahead TD from the NFC Championship game. No double-team, just mano-o-mano and he got pancaked!

So tell us who is the best And you better not drop Trufant's name in the mix! Just pathetic!

JSSN

@DawgGoneIt

Excuses, a whole boat load of excuses! What you did above was prove the point that people are making indicting this regime. Brent Grimes and John Abraham were the best defensive players that team had. Schematically regardless of set, What they bring (or brought to the table, and what they were asked to do).

Von Miller and Aldon Smith were exactly what year in theitr careers when they produced? "Well they were 1st Rd picks?" What round was Robert Mathis chosen in? Last year was put up or shut up year for "The Process." Time to shut-up! Change it, see where it goes.

Osi played standing up 35%-40% last year! What do you think he was doing when he returned the INT against the Rams?

DawgGoneIt
DawgGoneIt

@JSSN @BigCrimson75  If you honestly believe that Osi freakin Umenyiora is the best defensive player we have then you need to go turn on the tape. He's a good pass rusher but often gets owned in the run game. Not an overall defensive end anymore. He's moving to OLB and he's never stood up in his life! I wanna see if he can cover Jimmy Graham before I anoint him the best defensive player! He's basically the best pass rusher we have by default. Not saying much considering the other guys are Maponga, Goodman, Biermann, Bartu, and Massaquoi. 3 of those guys are 2nd year players, and Massaquoi has only been in the league for 2 seasons! He's going into his 3rd this season!
