5 things to know about Jadeveon’s Judgment Day

By D. Orlando Ledbetter

At the NFL combine, South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney brushed off the notion that he was a slacker because he didn’t work out.

He kept repeating that he’d be ready for his Pro Day.

Well, April 2 is tomorrow and Michael Cunningham will travel over to Columbia, S.C. for Jadeveon’s Judgment Day.

He’s considered the top player in the draft, but the Houston Texans may pass on him. It is believed that the St. Louis Rams, who hold the second pick, will snap up Clowney immediately.

Clowney has said that he’d like to play for the Atlanta Falcons, who hold the No. 6 pick in the draft.

Under this scenario, the Falcons must trade up to No. 2 to get Clowney. But the Falcons have too many holes to fill – tackle, center, pass rusher, tight end and free safety — and likely can’t afford to mortgage the future to get Clowney.  Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff brushed off Clowney’s trade request.

Here are five things to know about Jadcveon’s Judgment Day.

1. MEDIA: More than 100 credentialed media will be on hand at  Williams-Brice Stadium.

2. REPPING ROCK HILL: Clowney, a 6-foot-6, 266-pound defensive end from Rock Hill who was named a first-team All-American in his final two seasons at South Carolina.

3. SACKER OR SLACKER: Clowney had 13 sacks as a sophomore and three sacks as a junior, when he appeared to take some plays off.

4. DRAFT SPOT: ESPN’s Mel Kiper projects Clowney will be picked No. 1 overall by Houston or No. 3 overall by Jacksonville.

5. ATHLETIC FREAK: Clowney ran the 40-yard dash in a 4.53 seconds at the combine, the fastest by a defensive lineman at this year’s NFL combine. He broad jumped 124 inches, the best among defensive linemen, and had a vertical jump of 37.5 inches, the second-best among defensive linemen.

Wow, looks like this thread was seriously trimmed back and posts deleted.

I can't believe y'all so sensitive up in here bout a few posts suggesting proofreading before posting. I mean, a poster can threaten to take out a hit on another poster and that's OK, but say sumpin about incorrect spelling and POOF, you're gone! Y'all coulda just axed me!!! ;)

Like I said yesterday, don't look for Da Clown in an ATL uni next year. I like D-Led's suggestion about trading down and taking the safety from Louisville and maybe a TE or OL next.

ATL has not signed a free agent S, that oughta speak volumes about what they plan to do draft day.

Do NOT trade and move up. Games are won on the offensive line. Clowney is good, no doubt, but we can't waste draft picks. Those of you even mentioning Johnny Football as a possibility should be sent to Time Out for 30 days. You are just going on hype. Manziel, while athletically gifted, is a "me first" player and will be crushed by NFL defenses when he tries all that backyard football stuff. We NEED Olinemen, then Dbacks.

Falcons:

PLEASE do not draft Clowney.

Draft the best OT available (Robinson or Matthews) then Safety then LB.......................

Though Clowney is the best prospect available for our biggest need, I don't think we should trade up unless we can minimize the damage done.  It really hurts to lose draft picks, and we need as many as possible right now.

Don't do it!

The guy is POISON.  On the field a slacker.  Off the field a brainless juvenile.  In a clubhouse a disaster.

Yes, he's a freak.  So put him in a circus, not a Falcons uniform.

When other teams had to place 2 and sometimes 3 against him, and, he still dictated the game, THAT SAYS IT ALL, NOT THE STATS! the NFL teams will not be able to assign 2 or 3 to him every play! Does not matter if he is 266 or 280, his strength and speed will still dominate!  The most dominant player in college the last two seasons, an athletic freak, HE WILL BE A DOMINANT PLAYER IN THE NFL! You naysayers obviously have not watched the complete game tapes or you are ignorant of the game@!!

IF YOU TRADE UP TO 2 AND GET THE RAMS PICK YOU NEED TO GET JOHNNY MANZIEL AND THEN YOU WILL WIN A SUPER BOWL WITHIN 3 YEARS , WHOEVER GETS HIM WILL WIN A SUPER BOWL LOOKS LIKE MINNESOTA SO FAR IN MOCK DRAFTS , IF HOUSTON DOES NOT TAKE MANZEL MY FATHER IN HEAVEN WILL BRING A  HURRICANE THIS YEAR TO HOUSTON AND WIPE IT OUT AS HE WILL BE SO PISSED AND SO WILL BUM PHILLIPS

THE CLOWN AT SOUTH CAROLINA , IS 266 AND MOST OFFENSIVE LINEMAN AVERAGES 320 TO 330 , THE CLOWN WILL NOT MAKE IT IN NFL , REMEMBER ANDRE BRUCE , ENOUGH SAID , JAKE MATTHEWS  NUMBER 6  NEXT QUESTION BECAUSE IF THESE IDIOTS TRADE UP AND GET THAT CLOWN WELL THEY WILL NEVER WIN A SUPER BOWL EVER .

Jadeveon Clowney will fill two holes because it takes two or more players to block the freak.

I doubt the South Carolina Gamecocks would have gone 22-4 the past two seasons

without Jadeveon Clowney in the lineup.

Clowney will excite the fans and fill the seats.

@GT71

I think you're being far too critical.  What are you basing all of this on?  A couple plays he may have taken off?  Almost all defensive ends will occasionally take a play off when the play runs away from them.  It's called conserving energy, and is not a bad thing if done rarely.

Or are you basing this off of comments from old, bitter Steve Spurrier?

I think Clowney will be a great player, and so does every other NFL scout who knows anything at all.

@LeftisnotRight  Totally agree.  From the sixth spot in this draft,  Clowney, Mack, Robinson or Matthews will be available - as long as  somebody ahead of them takes a QB.

Clowney may be the next LT, but giving up multiple picks in this draft to get him ain't worth it.

I was for the Julio trade then and I'm still glad we did it.   He's a difference maker - when he's healthy.  When he's not, he's an empty spot on a roster that would be deeper if we hadn't given up four draft picks to get him.

We can't do that again.  Even for the next LT.

@Tea-Party-Meber time to get a new routine Joe? Does it still amuse you? How about try using pig latin for a while...maybe could amuse you for a bit?

Actually 33-6 the last three seasons with Clowney playing for South Carolina.

@CardiganBoy Yes, build depth with this draft..... that OL could use one more solid player. Pass rush is next.......FS has me nervous, another rookie in the secondary?

@gtcaryd @RambleOn84 @GT71

Exactly.  If we believe in our coaches' ability to motivate and teach, then Clowney is an elite prospect.  If we don't, then it doesn't really matter who we pick.
