Saints match offer sheet Bush signed with Falcons

By D. Orlando Ledbetter

The New Orleans Saints have elected to match an offer sheet the Falcons signed safety Rafael Bush, according to his agent.

The Saints had until Tuesday to match the offer or lose Bush to Atlanta.

The Saints issued Bush a one-year $1.4 million tender earlier this offseason. Bush was originally signed by the Falcons as an undrafted free agent out of South Carolina State in 2010.

Before joining the Saints, he also spent time with the Denver Broncos.

The Falcons did no comment about pending personnel moves.

Using one player transaction after another, we will defeat those cheating Asterisks with their their hidden accounting bounties! Audit the Fleur!

This whole situation was a win-win for the Falcons so I wasn't going to be upset with either outcome. Either way I simply don't understand where Loomis keeps finding the cap room to sign all these players.

Once we get an Elite QB, even with slightly above average defense-- major problems will be solved.  You are in denial if your disagree.

Dimitroff wins this battle of the egos.   The Falcons never intended on signing Bush.  The money they give him this year won"t be going to a disgruntled Jimmy Graham next year.  Leave to the Saints to overpay for a 3rd stringer just to keep him from being a Falcon.  Graham is a UFA next year and I'd be willing to bet his next stop is in Flowery Branch.

This was a no loss situation for ATL. Either they get Bush or put more pressure on the Saints' cap.

Saints just lost their starting center to the Giants. Perhaps they felt they needed to stop the exodus.

Good.

If Rafi Bush is the answer at FS, I'd rather not ask the question.

This really isn't a big deal. Bush is a good hitter and tackler, but not really a good free safety. He is not as good in coverage as DeCoud is. The Falcons were about to overpay for this guys mediocre services.

He pays his bonuses in the large part in the front portion of contracts, and does not back load his higher paid players. Then he does not have a lot of dead money. All he has to do is pick one of his vets to restructure like he did Will Smith in 2013. The Falcons have generally done the opposite (they backload). This is the first period in a long time the Saints have carried Dead Money this high ($13M plus), next year, they are sitting on $0 in dead money

I have no dog in this Saints-Falcons pissing contest; but this obsession with Graham has to end. The Cap is going to increase $10M-$12M due to the revenue next year by all calculations, Bush will only count $1M more (or so) against the Saints number in 2014 ($1.4M was already accounted for in the restricted tender). As much as Jimmy Graham hates it, he's a slave to the Franchise Tag. Regardless, in 2015, they have only 37 players under contract ($107M against the Cap). They'll be in transition, but Graham's money can be there if they choose to invest it. You're better off doing what Chicago did with Bennett as a UFA from the Giants. Draft an Ebron level talent, or find one of the TEs who will be a true UFA in 2015. That's all the choices the Falcons will truly have. Why? Because they'll have to re-up Julio Jones (and possibly Watherspoon).

""as good in coverage as DeCoud is?"

Seriously, did you watch many games last season?  QB's actually broke the huddle looking for DeCoud, and the moment they spotted him, they smiled and licked their lips.

"DeCoud" and "good in coverage" can never be used in a post!
