Panthers sign Falcons castoff Thomas DeCoud

By D. Orlando Ledbetter

Carolina signed former Falcons safety
Thomas DeCoud, the team announced on Thursday.

In 2012 DeCoud, 29, led Atlanta with six interceptions and ranked second in the league among safeties in that category. He was an alternate and played in the Pro Bowl.

He was not able to carry that level of performance into the 2013 season.

Last season, DeCoud dropped from being rated as the 64th safety in the league to the 83rd rated safety, by profootballfocus.com. His overall play against the run and in coverage dipped dramatically.

He started 15 games and had 83 tackles. Releasing DeCoud, saved the Falcons $3 million.

Someone tossed him a pen to sign his contract but he dropped it.

I would not so much discount this as a bad move for the Panthers.  We all know who and what Decoud is, however if he has those 9 to 10 beast in front of him playing defense, it will hide alot of the ineptitude of play he did here in Atlanta.  Dont get me wrong, offenses will find him, but with Hardy, Davis, Keuchly, Johnson and the other band of trouble on that defense they will be able to hide him very good until teams stretch the field on him and we all know that you only get 3 to 5 shots down the field a game ( if that many). If I had to go out on a limb, he will be much better than last year, but he will get exposed as well.

Well at least we know now when we play the Panthers if one of our running backs break into the last level of defense we're going to score a touchdown! And good luck trying to get on Julio, DeCoud. You just won't be able to handle him

I had hoped they would let him go. But the flipside of that is he should be able flourish with that defense and pass rush. Good Luck my man...

Good, this will only help the Falcons if he is on the field. Dude can't tackle...

The Panthers are finishing last in the South next year.

Great news!  Can't wait to see this marshmallow try to tackle Jones down the seam.

Good move by Falcons - to heap praise on player you want to be rid of, in hopes rival will take him off your hands, while at same time weakening their position to challenge you.

Good....he can now finger tackle and miss on Sundays vs. the Falcons.

SMDH, they've doomed their back end right after they had gotten it straighten out. Didn't they learn from having a non-instinctual player like Haruki Nakamura on their roster two seasons ago? Man, they've had a horrid offseason!

@JSSN

tt could have been a worse off season for the Panthers - they could have let the best offensive player the franchise has ever had go without trying to sign him at a reduced salary - hey, wait a minute...

With the exception of Hardy I agree.  They may have taken a step back! Lose SS, Cam is having off season surgery ( which should not be taken lightly) no big FA signings ( Decoud right HAHAHAHAHAHAHA), lost a RB. These Panthers might be going in reverse next year. Tampa is ON THE RISE!

What in the heck are you talking about the Saints for? Goodness, do you people ever let that pissing contest go? Saints, Saints, Saints, neither the Falcons or the Saints won the NFC South last year! You better start worrying about Tampa! Soliai and Jackson aside, you've still never contained the Carolina running game, even when they couldn't pass the ball! This division cannibalizes itself! But the Panthers did themselves no favors, much like the Falcons 2013 off-season (remember that one)

The Panthers in 12 games during Mike Smith's tenure have gained 1,874 on 343 carries and have averaged 5.5625!  Yeah, you're Precious! Not one game below 100 yds.! Only 2 games in the Mike Smith era have they averaged less than 4.0 yards (one I didn't round up)! The won the two games they averaged less than 4.0! SMDH, be a man and admit you have no clue! They might win the game, but they aren't "containing" the Panthers running game!

@JSSN  Wrong again. The alltime Falcons/Panthers record stands at 23-15 Atlanta, with the Falcons going from 9/17/2000 to 9/28/2003 and 12/12/2010 to 12/09/2012 without losing to the Panthers. So they have NEVER contained Carolina's running game huh?
