We’ll focus on team-needs, possible selections, players the Falcons have worked out and/or interviewed, etc. The Falcons own 10 picks in this draft. Today we’ll look at Ohio State linebacker Ryan Shazier, who recently visited the Falcons at their Flowery Branch offices.
Player: Ryan Shazier
School: Ohio State
Height and weight: 6-1, 237 pounds
Combine Numbers: 4.38 seconds in the 40-yard dash at his Pro Day. He didn’t run at the combine; 25 reps on the 225-pound bench press; 42-inch vertical jump and 10-10 broad jump, 4.21 in the shuttle and 6.91 in the three-cone drill.
Projected Round: He’s the third rated linebacker in the draft and is projected to be selected in the first by NFLDraftScout.com.
Career Highlights: He originally committed to play for Urban Meyer at Florida, through a change of circumstance, he ended up playing for him at The Ohio State University. Last season, he had 101 tackles. He played inside and outside for the Buckeyes.
Quotes: “My dad really helped out a lot when it came to becoming the player I am. My favorite player right now is Patrick Willis. But I feel my game favors Lavonte David a lot. At Ohio State we had a multiple defense. Sometimes we played in 4-3 and sometimes we’d be in a 3-4.”
Falcons level on interest: Moderately High. The Falcons have to be concerned about the lingering knee injury to Sean Weatherspoon. Undrafted rookies Joplo Bartu and Paul Worrilow played well last season, but the linebacker group could be upgraded in the draft. They Falcons would likely have to trade back into the late-first round to land Shazier.
Here are the Falcons draft picks:

- Round 3 – No. 68 overall
- Round 4 – No. 103 overall
- Round 4 – No. 139 overall (compensatory)
