Falcons exercise 5th year option on Julio Jones’ contract

By D. Orlando Ledbetter

FLOWERY BRANCH – The Falcons have exercised the fifth-year option on wide receiver Julio Jones today.

Falcons coach Mike Smith said last Tuesday, the team planned to have Jones around for a long time. The option will allow the team to start working on a long-term deal in the future..

The Pro Bowl wide receiver, who is recovering from foot surgery, is still working with the training staff.

“Again, I’m not going to talk about specific contractual situations,” Smith said. “I do know this, Julio Jones is going to be an Atlanta Falcons for a long, long time.”

The team elected to announce to move on its twitter account.

Smith said the Falcons expect to have Jones back for the beginning of the regular season.

“Julio is participating with our athletic performance department,” Smith said. “With (trainer) Marty Lauzon and his group. He will be able to get out on the field and do some walkthrough stuff with us when we start going.

“Our focus with Julio is one thing and that’s having him prepared for our opener, which I’m sure we’ll get the date in the next couple of days. I believe the schedule will be coming out in the next couple of days. But that’s what our focus is.

“He’s progressing well. We’re not going to do anything to hinder his time-frame in terms of getting back to work with us.”

At least it's for just one year.  They can make sure the foot is healed before a long term deal.

He will always have a bad foot! Bad draft!!

bad, bad foot injury...we'll see what he's got this year.

Julio jones needs to man up and stop being the chipper jones of the nfl. hes not tough enough to be a star receiver many times did jerry rice sit out half or the whole season? none.rice had harder licks or grueliness put on him morer than jones did.the difference, rice has more heart and is driven to win and be the best receiver than Julio jones does.julio and al hortford of the hawks are in the same lack or toughness and heart class.

Julio has got to learn to get down when there isn't more to gain. Protect yourself and your team from injury.

Roll Tide.

Smart move by the Falcons.

@cspecial Chipper  Jones gave 20 damn good years to the Braves and fans. He will be in Hall of Fame. Where you  been? T Jones is best in NFL.   SimpleDawg   is right on!

@cspecial  You gotta be the dumbest m'fer on Earth. He's already a star receiver. You do realize he was leading the NFL in receptions, and receiving yardage before his injury right? He was on pace to have 130 catches with over 1800 receiving yards. Those are All-Pro numbers. How dare u say he doesn't have the heart. Injuries are unfortunate but it has nothing to do with Julio's drive or heart. You're a fool

@cspecial  I've read some ridiculous comments on the AJC blogs. But this one take the cake. SimpleDawg pegged you just right.

@KeepOnSmilingWetWillie  Jones couldnt be any tougher. He doesnt need to learn anything, all he needs is to heal up and he will be right back takin' care of business.

What are you talking about???  He has never missed a game from a hit taken from a defender.  I'm pretty sure that getting down would not have stopped the screw from coming out of his foot.

You need a wet willie from that entire post.
