NFL 2014 Draft: Falcons select Prince Shembo

By D. Orlando Ledbetter

FLOWERY BRANCH – In the fourth round of the NFL draft, the Falcons selected linebacker Prince Shembo of Notre Dame with the 139th pick overall.

According to NFL Draft 2014 Preview:

Acknowledged at the combine that he was the player linked to an alleged sexual assault in a dorm room made by a former Saint Mary’s College student who committed suicide 10 days later. Shembo was never charged in connection with the incident.

Here’s a Chicago Tribune column on the case.

Shembo started 34-of-51 games at Notre Dame – 26 at right outside linebacker and eight on the left side…Finished with 145 tackles (71 solos), 24.5 stops for losses of 167 yards, 35 quarterback pressures, one fumble recovery and two forced fumbles…His 19.5 sacks for minus 155 yards ranks seventh on the school all-time record chart.

Really not impressed with Falcons draft. Matthews a no brainer pick. Beyond that they got beat out of any edge rusher they desperately needed. They draft another runstopper DT?? Another diminutive change of pace back? Why not another good running back if thats what you need. They draft an abuser of women that shouldnt have been drafted by anyone in the NFL. They pass on a decent player because he is gay vs sending a positive message by drafting the leagues first gay player. Art Blank is a coward and a bigot. Boycott the Falcons.

Well now we know why Manti Teo made up the whole "Catfishing" story...11 picks to go in the draft and the SEC Defensive MVP is on the outside looking in.  Pundits are trying to defend it - but logic says....

Shembo is a strange choice for Atlanta.  Nobody rates him all that high, why buy the PR grief?

Flacons past on Johnny Fottball but draft a rappest instead?

This dude is a piece of trash. If i see him at training camp i will give him hell. Raping a girl and then she commits suicide? i just lost a lot of respect for the falcons.

Not to make too much of this - but I just heard a guy with a show on national sportsradio say "If Sam were of the quality of player of Jadaveon Clowney, he would have been picked by the 6th round".  I thought - Wow - that says a lot (and maybe even some about me) - to basically say that you can get drafted, at some point,  in the NFL...even if you are Gay...as long as you are the best player in the whole draft.  Otherwise......

Atlanta has made solid moves this year, just go look at the Buc's Saints boards and see how upset they are about it.

I agree logical choices from our camp have been in short supply the last few years but no sense looking a gift horse in the mouth this year.

Jemea Thomas drafted by Bill Belichik - a good landing spot.

Well you can look at it as glass half full or glass half empty!  4-12 and coach and GM on one year deal makes me think glass half empty.  What happened to  Falcon's filter with Prince Shembo?  Just tired of smug talk by Dmitroff.  Vanilla comments by Smitty, and keep watching great talent go to our opponents.  While we keeping taking obscure "slick" picks that probably should be delivering mail or flipping burgers.  I can see other NFL GM's laughing now.  Mayock , Prisco, Kiper, & Mcshay are guessing just like everyone else.  Saints, Panthers, & Bucs went with big receivers.  We take a short corner.  Those teams pass the ball.  We get no-name pass-rushers.  I think pass rushers are the #1 premium position besides quarterback and 2 years in a row we take them late in the draft.  Why sign Solia, Jackson?  Resign Peters, Babineaux, & Jerry then take Rashede Hageman in the 2nd round? 2l LBs from the national champs and 1 from last years national champs were available.  You take a guy with a questionable background and a LB from Syracuse.  You cut Decoud and take a 4th/5th round FS in the 3rd round.  But we shouldn't question these moves?

Just can not understand the NFL evaluators not selecting A. J. McCarron until the 164th pick.  He is not too small (6'3", 220), like they say about Manziel & Murray.  He has plenty of arm strength and accuracy.  He is a proven leader and winner.  The only knocks I have heard is they did not like that he backed out of the Senior Bowl and they do not put much stock in the Wins of a college QB.  I find this 2nd part strange because that is ALL they care about at the NFL level.

The majority of these defensive draftees have come from the B1G. Known as one of the slowest conferences in the country. I'm a little perplexed by these pics and none of these guys were standouts

OK - to be fair to Ricardo...looks like he can play some ball (from pro-mock):

Strengths
Even though Ricardo comes in quite a bit smaller than most of the receivers he will be going up against, he has never shied away from the challenge. Ricardo likes to take chances and is a true ball hawk. His fantastic footwork skills makes him able to close on receivers, even when he takes chances on plays.

Weaknesses
Allen’s highly aggressive play style makes him susceptible to pump fakes and double moves. Ricardo also keeps his eyes in the back field, so he bites on play action as well. Also, with Allen’s size, he could be handled physically by bigger NFL receivers.

Projection
I look to see Ricardo going somewhere between low fourth and seventh round.

Do not misunderstand me. I like Shembo. He played for Notre Dame whose schedule does not give them a "week off". It's a tough schedule and they play a good team every Saturday.  Shembo will make an excellent NFL player.

Arthur...Arthur...Wherefore art thou Arthur.?  Your pickers elevators are not going to the top.  Meanwhile

Kansas City done picked Murray who is smart, clever and knows how to think football on the field.  Could have made a great backup QB.

I don't hate the Shembo pick, but I'm not exactly gushing over it either.  And while its just a late 4th, almost into the 5th, round pick, I think the Falcons could have done better considering Telvin Smith, Christian Jones, and Adrian Hubbard were all still on the board at pick 139.

I have not seen very many picks in this draft that eternally complaining Falcons fans have not complained about.

Well at least we got Jake Matthews...and Freeman looks like a tough little running back.  I really hate watching all these other picks (makes me feel like we may have "reached" again a bit)...on some guys.  Sometimes we outsmart ourselves.

@AABraves ...Yep...thank heavens...the NFL folks will say this is an historic occasion...but in truth it was an historic embarrassment.  I'm sure the Commissioner did some damage control/pressuring to get this done...."compensatory 7th round pick" for the SEC Defensive MVP....wow.

DJlaysitup
DJlaysitup

@AABraves I don't think it's fair to name call Art as a bigot...or to really call for a boycott.  It's not like we were the only team passing on the better quality player because he was gay and may cause locker room troubles. But I will agree with "cowardly"....too a point.

We preach we want to show "character"...then...

Really?!
Really?!

@Barves_Loss_Agian I thought you would hang this act up by now.  You never answered my question.  Are you the same kid who used to post about Georgia recruiting a fake Samoan kid?  You share the same traits that moron did.  Doing the same silly character all day every day. Repeating the same tired joke that only seems to amuse you. Have no life.

I must say despite the glaring obviousness of this new character it seems to fool more people or maybe the samoan gag was so lame few people bothered pointing out it was all a lie.  Anyway are you that goofball or another goofy kid?

@WolfWithanE  NFL needs to send a huge message to these thugs. You will not ever play in the league if you abuse women. No they say you will make your money no matter what.

@WolfWithanE ...There is no telling what really happened.  As we all know  are all sorts of possibilities when it comes to male/female relationships.  I will say though - that an actual suicide - is a big red flag....biggest red flag you can get.

@PaulinNH  I felt sure that Jemea would wind up an undrafted free agent.  This is a big win for him!

@LessIsMore  Decoud was below average and had one good year.  We signed the Dline guys for depth and to compete for a position.  If you knew more, you would be in the draft room.  I guess less really is more.

Really?!
Really?!

@RBI Apparently quite a few teams were perturbed by McCarron's  less than truthful comments to the press.  He claimed several GM's told him he would be drafted in the first or second round and it seems that was a lie.  He also was labeled as too arrogant which might be unfair.  Now he has something to prove so let him prove it or lock down his hot girlfriend as quickly as possible.

PaulinNH

@RBI

All the NFL cares about is winning in the NFL.  They don't care how many wins a QB has in college.  David Greene was the starting QB in 42 wins in college he was drafted 2 rounds after a guy who only won 17 games in D 1 - Aaron Rodgers.

@DJlaysitup Strange that the Falcons stress Ricardo's play as the reason for taking him and downplay the "measurables", while doing just the opposite for Southward.  Where is the consistency?  What do the Falcons really prize?

Really?!
Really?!

@likeitis Good teams like purdue, temple, navy and air force?  Also they had a week off oct 12th in addition to all those "tough" teams I mentioned.  Also the alleged rapist said he was instructed by notre dame to lie and cover up the incident.

Really?!

@kerryb I am happier about more picks than I am perplexed about.  Can you honestly say you LOVE every pick and have no questions about a few?  Even the reach on that safety or the slow short CB with stubby arms?  REALLY?!

RBI

@DJlaysitup My sentiments, too.  Sure makes me feel like we "reached" in rounds 3-5... AGAIN!!!  Just like each of the past 5 years Dimitroff has been running the Falcons Draft.

@DJlaysitup @AABraves  Agreed its pretty pathetic but not as bad if he hadnt been drafted at all. Looking forward to wearing his Rams jersey...Great PR for the Rams sad for the rest of the league..they lose.

@Wrecker @LessIsMore Nut job if you look at what I said.  I never said Decoud didn't deserve to get cut.  Safety was a need and they reached. If you take Hageman then why sign and resign so many dline guys.  All of those guys want make the team.  Have fun in your little follow the Falcons mgmnt world.  Maybe they can call you up and tell your simple mind to jump off a bridge and of course you will do it since they can do know wrong.  If they knew more they would not have went 4-12 and be on one year lame-duck deals.  Notice how  I keep bringing that up, lol..

@Really?!
Yeah, I guess interview skills might be part of it.  I would have thought with all the interviews with the media McCarron had that hevwould know how to ace interviews .  But, that could be...

I always thought the NFL wanted their QB's to be arrogant, like fighter pilots.  Now they measure the degree to which they are arrogant.  Wow.

RBI
RBI

@PaulinNH @RBI  But, if all the NFL cares about is Wins, how can they discount QB's who know how to win?  That makes no sense.

I understand discounting QB's from winning programs if they do not have enough arm strength, or accuracy, or can not read defenses, or did not run a Pro offense in college.  But, none of these apply to McCarron.

@kerryb ..day before yesterday.  They assigned me to assessing slow Purdue cornerbacks...did my best.

Please tell me how a kid with one good year where he gets 9 sacks in three games against pedestrian competition, then follows that up with mediocre work outs becomes more than an undrafted free agent. Post season awards aren't predictors of success in the league. Ask Heisman trophy winner Jason White from OU.

@Wrecker @LessIsMore I could not tell you are a 40 year fan and I think you started with the name mockery.  I can choose to be  a fan anytime I want.  I have been a Falcon fans for over 20 years, so what.  I do know football I played high school and college ball. That "we" stuff really doesn't matter because he - A. Blank wants to win now and not just a 1st round playoff game.  You are so use to mediocrity you will except anything like so many others.  Mr. Blank wants a super bowl.  I think  he should get it.  That's why Dmitroff and Smitty and you will be all watching the Falcon's from home after this  season.  Pathetic.

Wrecker

@LessIsMore @Wrecker  Thanks for the name calling.  That really drives your point home.  Being a fair weather fan means you never need an umbrella.

I have been a Falcons' fan for 40 years.  Until Mr. Blank, TD, and CMS arrived, the Falcons had never had back-to-back winning season.  They have one bad year and you rip them?  Go root for another team somewhere else.  We don't need you.

@RBI

Not every "college winner" is a "true leader." Moreover, not everyone who wins in college (especially at football factories) has intangibles in their skill set (see Greene, Leak, Frost, and Leinert). Lastly, not all "college winners" can be coached out of their limiting bad habits (see Tebow, Wilson, and Shockley), A.J. McCarron has a got of maturing to do. He needs to shut-up and take advantage of being in professional QB meeting room.

RBI
RBI

My point is that knowing how to win is a critical feature of any team leader.  With all the minutia that the NFL measures and evaluates, knowing how to win is not one to be discounted.

PaulinNH
PaulinNH

@RBI

Because a QB winning in college does not mean he will win in the NFL.

David Greene won in college.  So did Matt Leinert, Vince Young, Tim Tebow, Colt McCoy, etc etc

@DJlaysitup @kerryb  Mike Mayock loved the pick at where we got him and he knows more about football and scouting than you will ever know.  Said the kid is not afraid to tackle and will throw his body into anything.
