Injury update: Jones, Weatherspoon and Motta

By D. Orlando Ledbetter

By Michael Cunningham

FLOWERY BRANCH – Falcons coach Mike Smith said wide receiver Julio Jones and linebacker Sean Weatherspoon are unlikely to participate in any of the team’s activities before the start of training camp.

Smith said neither Jones (foot) nor Weatherspoon (knee) would be “doing a whole lot” in the offseason conditioning program or the full-team minicamp scheduled to begin later this month.

“Our focus is strictly on getting them ready to go for training camp” in late July, Smith said.

Jones suffered an injury to his left foot in Week 5 last season and missed the rest of the season after undergoing surgery. Jones also had surgery in March 2011 to insert a screw in the foot to repair a stress fracture. After Jones had some outstanding workouts in spite of the injury, the Falcons traded five picks to move up and take Jones with the No. 6 overall pick.

Weatherspoon missed the final two games of 2013 because of the knee injury. About three weeks ago Weatherspoon said he was at “80 percent” health and wasn’t sure of his timetable to return to the field.

Safety Zeke Motta (neck) also isn’t expected to participate in offseason activities. Motta had surgery in December to repair a cervical fracture.

It doesn't really matter when they start since they are professionals, compared to garbage can UGA! Georgia couldn't get to the toilet bowl without help!

Uuuggghhh..... Who is starting at safety opposite Willie Mo?

Lowrey.

My reply: Another injury riddled cast off from another low performing team.

Wouldn't an injury update include what the injury was?   Oh yeah, it was a foot injury. That explains it.

Dang, all of these quips and retorts, but for some reason they disappear? Oh well, folks can actually talk football! Too bad for you ZuZu ("How weird"!

Julio will be back. He is a gamer who didn't want to sit out to get surgery. Witherspoon is a beast and will be back strong again. These are two quality guys...

This does not bode well for 2014. If Jones and Weatherspoon cannot play at 100% and stay healthy there are two HUGE holes the team as constituted cannot fill. There is not any effective depth at either position.

For those who use the "bust" word, injuries happen. Both of these players have been top-notch at their respective positions. If it proves anything it's there is normally a severe penalty down the road for trading away top draft picks and for top and mid-level draft picks that don't pan out (lack of depth).

to be honest, i was worried about that julio injury, which is WHY, i wanted the falcons to draft taylor lewan instead of matthews. the reason being, i wanted the falcons to become more  of a traditional, ground and pound, running team. if you can run the ball, you dont need elite receivers. think back. ryan ( as any quarterback), have  their most efficient games when they have a running attack. its no coincidence that when the offensive line ceast to run block, both turner and now jackson look bad. the focus is on the wrong thing on both sides of the football STILL with the falcons. seattle, san fran, etc. those teams RUN the football and beat you up on both sides of the line of scrimmage.

dimitroff panicked after the falcons got blown out by green bay in that playoff game, and fooled himself into thinking that finesse wins championships. no, they shouldve KEPT doing what they was doing on offense, running the ball and pounding with harvey dahl, etc. and BEEFED up the problem at that time, which was the defense. no defensive run stopping tackle. no beast at middle linebacker, and no beasts at safeties. thats ALL they needed at the time....

Are they withholding further information on Corey Peters?

Can we now officially call Weatherspoon a complete bust and move on? Julio might be given one more year to see if my 98 year old grandmother isn't more injury prone than he is. If not, another official bust. New head coach, please. Looks like every guy on the team is laying down on this legend in his own stubborn mind, Mike "Bullett Head" Smith. Jaquars are calling your name, Mikey. Please answer that call...

I agree concerning Jules.

Spoon enjoys IR too much.

The repercussions of the knee-jerk reaction to the Green Bay game will take years to overcome. The Falcons still have not come close to replacing the productivity of Turner or the offensive line, the productivity that balanced the offense and provided the foundation for all those winning seasons. Now subtract Gonzalez and perhaps operate with a diminished Jones (and an aging White) and this just does not add up to a playoff year.

SOB --- Jules is no bust. Plenty of great ones get hurt.

I wonder if SF can withstand the Bowmann injury same as they did the Crabtree injury.

I know which one is the better player.

Oh, there's everyone's favorite dropper of great comments!

It means I can spell "Hageman" and you can not. Therefore, "dumber than a rock" trumps whatever you are claiming on the football intelligence chain!

When was Weatherspoon ever "back strong again?"

seminoleking

@DawgDadII  EXACTLY. we on the same page. we get the sense that the falcons are STILL counting on julio and the big play offense, and putting band aids everywhere else. amazing, for mike smith to be a "defensive" coach, the falcons are too finesse. if you build around the running game and defense, you can plug and play. see what happened when julio and roddy went down to injuries? the falcons were finished...

SOB
SOB

I hope not. If pulling for your home town team for the past 48 years and still waiting for a Super Bowl victory makes one a "troll" -- so be it. But I did miss Sunday school this morning. Kind of feel bad about that...

Don't delete, you tried that one before! You need to stick to your piss poor attempts at football commentary. You have a platform, that trail of misnamed players and sloppy ideas and always yelling (internet version) "NO ONE CARES" shows your boorish immaturity!

Pittsburgh went all in addressing that defense that you asked about in the draft and UFAs. As far as Rice, that case gets weirder by the day. They didn't play about getting their O-line in order.

BigCrimson75

Changes?

I like Baltimore slightly over Pitt. That greatly depends on Ray Rice a) bouncing back b) not being suspended or jailed!!

@BigCrimson75

Remember the convo will all had back before the NFC championship game when Ledbetter kept saying their LBs were overrated? Willis is hyped too much, but he rarely makes a bad defensive play call. That cannot be overstated. It'll be interesting.

I've been meaning to ask you if you've caught up on the changes in Pittsburgh and Baltimpre yet?

BigCrimson75
BigCrimson75

They drafted a good player from Aubie last year --- Corey Leminore, but he's a OLB(likely solid insurance for Aldon). Borland from whiskey might be ok. The UFA from Stanford is fiery but smallish.

Bowmann is world class --- much better than the more hyped Willis.
