The Falcons signed wide receiver and special teams maven Courtney Roby, formerly of the New Orleans Saints, today, according to the team.

The Falcons created a roster spot by releasing wide receiver Dominique Croom on Tuesday.

Roby, 31, was the Saints’ special teams captain before being released in their cut-down to 53 players last season. He’s 6-foot-1 and 189 pounds and played at Indiana.

Roby was with the Saints from 2008 to 2012..

His biggest contributions were made on special teams as a return man and on punt and kickoff coverage. He was a “gunner” on coverage teams.

He played in 62 games with the Saints and was voted special teams captain by his teammates in 2011 and 2012.

He averaged 25.6 yards on 94 kickoff returns and had a 97-yarder for a score to open the second half against the St. Louis Rams in 2009, to help the Saints to their ninth win in a row to open the season while they were on their way to winning Super Bowl XLIV.

He was picked by the Tennessee Titans in the third-round (68th overall) of the 2005 NFL draft. He played with the Titans from 2005-06 and had a brief stints with the Cincinnati Bengals and Indianapolis Colts in 2008 before landing with the Saints.

Roby is the cousin of former NFL punting legend, the late Reggie Roby.

@DOrlandoLedbetter

So are they going to carry him and reduce Jacquizz Rogers or Antone Smith's role as either play caller or gunner on special teams? Or is he actively going to be compete to be in the WR rotation against Davis and Johnson as well?

Maybe it's just me, but I've never heard of the guy. Does this signing really deserve the headline attention given to it by the AJC?

We'll finally get the inside 'skinny' on bounty gate.

So we're upgrading with a Saints reject.  Mmmmm.

This guy is lightning fast if he still has that spring in his step at age 31 and with 9 years in the NFL he'll be a good leader for all these younger guys.

So we suddenly have a boatload of kick returners after having none for the last 5 or 6 seasons - am I missing something? And we suddenly have a legit backup quarterback after going without one all season last year?

What is going on with this team? And we didn't trade our entire draft board away to move up 5 slots to get Clowney! Is Pioli actually having some influence over Dummytroff? This is really weird.

Are you saying he sat out the 2013 season?

You're a Falcons fan alright! Go ask Eric Weems about all of those great receiving days he had in the ATL! Yeah, you're dismissed!

No thanks, I'll get my animation and education the old fashioned way Pre-K thru 12, University, and Post-Grad. Already done that, hope that anime helped you. Did they have a geography one? Was Buffalo on it? :-)

@Esquire

He was released in the final cuts of 2013. He was not picked up by anyone. That was coming a injury shortened 2012 campaign. Yep, he's Falcons material!

"He’s never been more productive than he was when he was a rookie with the Titans in 2005, where he had 21 of his 25 career catches.

Translated, if he ends up doing anything for the Falcons this year, there has been a catastrophe.

Like last year." -- Darin Gantt, NBC Sports/Pro Football Talk

@JSSN Very creepy how you lurk on an Atlanta Falcons Blog to hate on the Falcons and Falcons Fans. Why dont you find a hobby,needlepoint or cross stitch both seem about right for you,give em a shot.

@zuzu331

When you find something other than "creepy, hating, lurk, (lumping all) Falcons fans" in the same boat, then say something. You're nothing more than what you profess to demean. Cross stitch and needle point are fun, if you have the talent for such things. I already have 6 hobbies, the Cartecay was great yesterday. You on the other hand, still trying find Buffalo? Much in common with the Falcons, what's that Super Bowl victory percentage? :-) Dang it sucks being you!

No, I'm not a woman or a played out 1980s variety show character. Meanwhile, you (not "your ilk") keeps searching for a button to push. Enjoy the remnants of 4-12! P.S. Find Buffalo yet?
