HOUSTON — Falcons left tackle Sam Baker has a torn right patellar tendon and will be for the season, the Falcons announced Sunday.

“Following his injury in the game, Sam underwent a number of tests and it was determined that he had suffered a torn patellar tendon and will miss the rest of the season,” Falcons coach Mike Smith said in a statement released by the team. “Sam had worked extremely hard to get back on the field after missing most of last season, and he was having a good camp. I know he is disappointed, but I also know he is a very resilient football player and will do whatever he can to bounce back.”

Baker, who was trying to come back from left knee surgery, was taken from the field via cart with 9:38 left in the second quarter of an exhibition game against the Houston Texans on Saturday.

Falcons coach Mike Smith didn’t rule out switching rookie Jake Matthews to left tackle.

Baker, who’s battled injuries since being taken in the first round of the 2008 draft, was emotional as he took off his helmet and was tended to by the trainers. It was announced as a “knee” injury and that he would not return to the game.

Teammates took off their helmets and watched intensely as the team doctor and athletic trainers tended to Baker. After a few minutes and a stop of play, Baker tentatively rose to his feet and didn’t put his full weight on his right leg as he got on the cart.

He received as applause from the Houston crowd as he was taken off the field.

Since being drafted, Baker has played all 16 games just twice — in 2010 and 2012. The Falcons went 13-3 both of those seasons.

The patellar tendon curves between the knee cap and the tibia. Dr. Bert Mandelbaum, orthopedic surgeon and co-chair of medical affairs at the Institute for Sports Sciences in Los Angeles, said.

In 2012, when Baker started every game for the Falcons at left tackle, quarterback Matt Ryan set five franchise passing records and the team fell one play short of making its way to the Super Bowl.

In 2013, when Baker played just four games before succumbing to knee surgery, Ryan was sacked 44 times, was pressured an NFL-high 203 times and the Falcons finished 4-12, tied for worst record in the NFC.

He was adjusting to his third offensive line coach. The Falcons had Paul Boudreau from 2008-2010. He was replaced by Pat Hill and Paul Dunn. After Hill and Dunn were fired over the offseason, the Falcons hired Mike Tice to coach the offensive line.

Some still contended that Baker would eventually make way for Matthews at left tackle and that he’ll end his career at right tackle.

The Falcons gave Baker a six-year, $41 million contract with $14.3 million guaranteed on March 12, 2013.

Really?  Between the 50's?  I believe there is ONLY ONE 50 yard line! Maybe the Rules Committee made a change that I overlooked...

What, no one broke out the Kumbaya song yet? Enjoy the next three weeks, as there is such a serious discourse being held here! ;-)

Hope the best for Sam Baker but this is not BIG news to Falcons fan.  When did we have a full season of 16 games from this guy?

If you so tough Mike Smith, then you better had prepared these backups to be ready to step in and lead.

Samantha is like BJ for the Braves - great contract but lousy performer from Day 1. At least BJ stays healthy. Cut Baker, draft LT or OL next year w/ 1st pick.

Totally expected. Part of the transition.

Time to move forward.  Good luck in the future, GingerBeard!

Matthews to LT, Holmes to RT.

Based on what Clowney was doing, I don't think losing Baker is killer.

Either way, all these players are Hair-Gels picks.

Baker never should have re-inked in the first place.

Steven Jackson needs to get off his sorry a$$ and contribute something.

#71s a freaking joke. A waste. A pathetic infidel.

I can already see Smitty playing Lowery over Ishmael, even though Kemal is less likely to screw up......don't get me wrong their both garbage, but Ishmael at least doesn't run from contact.

Our MLBs Worrilow and Bartu are Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Do. :(

Hair-Gels appearance in the 3rd qtr made me puke. What an a$$.

Arthur actually figured a way to hire the 2 biggest jacka$$es in pro football to run His team.

Its unreal. :(:(:(:(

Where are all the outspoken fans that where giving me such crap for saying we needed to draft 2 OTs back before the draft?????

Memo to A. Blank.  For your next GM hire (which should be next February after the Falcons finish 4-12 again) try to hire someone who has more credentials than just getting Bill Bilichek his coffee and donuts please.

maybe thomas can trade 5 draft picks to get a receiver in next year's draft!  he knows his stuff---remember, he used to be in new england!!!

Having a fragile china doll for an offensive lineman is a waste of everyone's time. At least now we can get someone in there who we can count on. I would rather have a 3 man team of people I can depend on than a 10 man team of people I cannot depend on. Onward and upward.

Now now everybody lets not forget, allof you and all of the media had MY FALCONS DEAD IN THE WATER after vick and peetomuch left and what did T.D. and M.S. do for MY FALCONS gave them life again.

Ok, now i'm offering $45/ each for between the 50's-lower level, for the Steelers game.

Don't wait until they are 2-12, because then you only get $20.

I was very worried before the season, because I was not sure the Birds had done enough to shore up one of the worst offensive lines in the league.  Adding Matthews made me happy, but I was still worried about Baker and the center situation.  I am afraid this might be the beginning of another bad season for the offense.

Anybody want to tell us that we'll be fine because of Matthews? If I was Matty, I'd up my insurance. (You know, just in case he suffers a career ending injury, running for his life, or getting planted like a daisy...)

Now is the time for Sam to think about retirement. Take his guaranteed money, invest in a modest home and some kind of business. Sit back and heal, and spend some quality time with the family. Too bad, he is snakebit, and the Falcons, can not count on him, any more. Any OT's , getting cut (because they aren't good enough to start for another team), could probably start for us. Last year, it was Smitty claiming our OL, was going to be just fine! Here we go again...

Sam Baker gone for the season? We should be used to it by now, it's not like anything is different, right? I'm sorry for him, but maybe his body is trying to tell him something...good thing we still have Lamar, it'll be like nothing has changed. How depressing.

EricJoiner

Too bad for Baker.  GOOD for Falcons.   Let the Jake Matthews era begin.   We invested too much in Baker with little return.  I hate to see a guy get hurt, but its time to move on anyway.

That's a shame for Sam Baker.  Looks like the Birds' injury bug continues.

Last week's game with Miami was encouraging.  The team looked good.  This week?  We looked like the same sad sack, grab-asstic bunch that schlepped their way through preseason 2013, then lost a winnable game to New Orleans in the opener.

It was all downhill from there.

Falcons have no will to play anymore and are just going through the motions. They let the Texan's quarterbacks look like the elite QBs of the league, against a soft and sloppy defense. These guys get paid too much money for this nonsense to continue. What makes it even worse is the fact that the head coach, Mike Smith, has no clue in what to do to get these guys ready for the season.

Pistol offense huh? They shot a wad of blanks against Houston. Falcon's high powered offense seems to have faded away into oblivion.

Good field position from punt and kickoff returns? Uh-huh, looking good Hester. < still waiting

Two weeks left and then it counts. Drew Breeze will destroy this team in week one and will be feasting on that Falcons' secondary. Might as well start packing those bags Coach Smith. Don't want to be late at the bus station.

Time to just cut this guy as he can't stay healthy.  Lets hope Lamar can reach all of that "potential" TD saw in him in the 3rd round.

Did you not read the article? It answered your question quite clearly:

"Since being drafted, Baker has played all 16 games just twice — in 2010 and 2012. The Falcons went 13-3 both of those seasons."

@BigCrimson75  I 100% agree that fantasy football Dimitroff needed to be fired at least after last season.  But HC Smith can only play the players that are healthy and on the team.  He didn't put  together this roster of horrible lineman.

@UGA76 Seantrell Henderson is balling in Buffalo.

What round was he selected in?

Didn't he play for Smitty at the Sr Bowl?

BigCrimson75

@THEBITTERTRUTH we won't miss Baker. Its nothing like the Spoon injury. The more Baker played the more likely Ice got paralyzed.

Wouldn't count on Smith leaving anytime soon. ATL pro sports teams are legendary for clinging to overmatched coaches far too long.

@Michaelee Agreed.  Hester is a HUGE disappointment so far.  And it looks like Bosher's leg is far from regular season strength.

Our D once again can't stop anybody on third-and-anything.

The NFC South is a tough division.  We may be the bottom dwellers this year.

@BigCrimson75 @UGA76  You may be 100% correct but there hasn't been a HC in history that could win with our current OL.  What does it say about a team's makeup when for two years in a row the draft is going to be used for 2 OL and two OLBs that can rush the passer.

Falcons73

Last I checked, you have to make the playoffs to have any chance of winning in the post season. You can't have it both ways, they either truly suck (which you know they don't) or you admit that they have been good under jack a$$ watch (just haven't made it to the Super Bowl).

DawgNole
DawgNole

@Falcons73

Actually, the do truly suck--in the postseason, when the games really matter.
