Falcons sign Weems, release Sambrano

By D. Orlando Ledbetter

FLOWERY BRANCH — Wide receiver Eric Weems, who made the Pro Bowl as a special teams player while with the Falcons, was re-signed by the team on Thursday.

Weems was recently released by the Chicago Bears.

The Falcons waived wide receiver Jabin Sambrano.

Weems, 5-foot-9. 195 pounds, was originally signed by the Falcons as a college free agent out of Bethune-Cookman following the 2007 NFL draft.

He played five seasons with the Falcons before signing with the Chicago Bears in 2012.

Weems set a franchise record for the longest kick return touchdown in Falcons history with a 102-yard return at Tampa Bay

Oh Great!!

Can he play on the offensive or defensive line? We need a little help there...

Matt Ryan will be as he normally has as last year being average not elite.  Every play where he cannot seem to hit the receiver or put it where the receiver will be (not where he last was) is not the the blame of the O-Line.  Unfortunately, you could have gotten the best Tackles in the league and it would not make a difference.  Our QB has to make a better effort to be make quicker decisions, be more accurate or at least put the ball where only the receiver has a chance.  He needs to take a page from NO QB's book and learn to look off the safe and/or pump fake some times.  He is very predictable as a passer because he keeps his eye on the target, and that allow the LBs and safeties to key off and close the gap created by the receivers.  So, when the opp defense figure him out... typically by the end of the 2nd quarter, and the passing game struggles........ be sure to not only blame the O-Line,  and receivers but also look at QB.

This is a bad move to get Weems back.  If anyone saw the last Chicago pre-season game, they would understand why Weems was let go.  He was as bad as when he was here the first time.  Looking at the moves we make it clear someone does not know what they are doing.  We have other young player that will do better or at least the same as what Weems is capable of doing on special teams.

Chill out guys.  Weems is an excellent blocker and Gunner.  In case you haven't noticed, all of our special teams have been struggling.  He's not just a returner.

Since we are interested in returning former birds.... May I offer the following:

1.) John Abraham - His loss to injury playing in a meaningless game against TB (thanks coach) is the main reason the Falcons did not win the Super Bowl in 2012.  Letting him go after the season was a mistake of fireable proportions and guaranteed that the Falcons would have no pass rush in 2013 (that ones on you Dimitroff).

2.) Brent Grimes - He has an injury, we cut him and he goes on to a pro-bowl outing as a Miami Dolphin. How many cats do YOU know who at 5'7" can completely take Megatron out of a game???? And we replaced him with Asante Samuel who we cut a year later.

Idiotic personnel decisions, more than anything else, have doomed this team. T..D. time to get smart, or get out.

guys.. the reason I think he did this is because Hester has really lost about 3 steps and they probably couldnt see it until he was in pads against competition..... have yall seen his kick returns with us. there is no seperation

@Columbus68 In 2012 things were different, it seemed like we had a good defense but we were able to force turnovers. Teams still drove down the field on us because of lack of pass rush. We got lucky and missed our window. 2012 is over. We need defense now, we need pass rush, we need a SOLID running game that will open up play action. We need to be like the Giants used to be but Koetter has turned us into a pass happy team and its easy for defenses to judge what we are going to do.  More blame should be put on Matty, he has to put the ball on the target every down, thats what we pay him for, he also needs to step up in the pocket when it collapses but he doesnt.  He has just enough time as any other QB to let the ball go.  You cant blame Matty though in this town because hes our 100m dollar man who is perfect. All week people blamed Julio for that stop and go in the first series vs the Texans but Matty was WAY off target and the ball should have been over Julio's left shoulder not the right.  If you watched Hard Knocks Matty even admitted it.  If you cant put the ball on target then you dont get yards after the catch which has been one of our biggest problems on offense since Matty became QB.  I love this team TBH but its time to start putting pressure on every team in this city to WIN.

Now I just think Thomas "boy genius" Dummytroff has gone totally Schizophrenic! Let's go of Weems, has no return guy for a full year, then signs 3 of them for this season (including Weems the guy we used to have). Next thing he'll do is bring back Norm Van Brocklin to coach the quarterbacks!

TD has shown himself to be a complete birdbrain!

I'll take Weems over Hester right now!!! You got Javier Arenas on your squad he should be returning kicks.

Trade Hester now for an O-Lineman or someone who can make a play on defense for the love of god... Week one and Week 2, Brees and Dalton.... Defense gives up 1,000 yds in the first two weeks!!! BET!!!

@ricop001  Matt Ryan had >4,500 yards passing, 4th highest completion percentage for starting QB's in the entire league (67.4%), averaged 282.2 yards/game and had a season QB rating of 89.6 (10th best for all starting QB's)........with the 32nd ranked OL (stats prove they were the absolute LAST ranked OL in the NFL), Julio Jones on IR after the 5th game & Roddy White hobbled/injured all season!!!!! He has 2.0-2.7 seconds before he gets crushed on almost every passing play......how many NFL QB's could/would put up these impressive stats in his situation??? The obvious answer is probably on one other QB and that is Peyton Manning. Every team knew we were throwing the ball because the Falcons had zero running game AND the defense was ranked 27th in the entire league.

Yeah......I agree with The ultra-biased, Matt Ryan hater ricop001; Matt Ryan is most definitely the problem in Atlanta <<<===SARCASIM. You have got to be kidding me?!?!?!?!??!??!

The Falcons did not "cut" Brent Grimes. Miami signed him to a big, long-term contract as a unrestricted free agent. And it would have cost the Falcons a lot more money to sign Abraham than what Arizona offered him and signed him for when he was not a highly sought after player as another unrestricted free agent as well.

Dirtyb8

@Ackshun Its pretty obvious Dimitroff is an idiot man. Baker, a very average LT gets injured and he offers him a large contract. Grimes, one of our best corners, gets injured one season and we release him. Now we got Alford who gets beat on every play by average receivers and then Trufant who cant seem to cover anyone without getting pass interference calls.

Did anyone else notice the defenders bull rushing our C and RG players (collapsing the pocket almost immediately) AND Lamar Holmes getting embarrassed like an open door ALL season long in 2013????????????????????? The 32nd ranked OL in the entire NFL!!!!!

@1337S0lja @Columbus68 Also don't forget that Ryan has no mobility at all. And when I say no, I mean NONE at all. Heck, even Fitzpatrick can pick up yards by scrambling. You also forget that 3rd and short yardage play, when the ball was thrown behind Roddy White on a very manageable 3rd down. Its drives like those that severely hurts you when you can't convert. Problem is not just the offensive line. Its actually all around. Only thing that I can see we managed to improve is our run game. At least we won't be dead last in the league anymore but still it's no where close to being in the top.

@candlin14 In todays NFL MOST teams give up 400 yards a game.  The Falcons have to win just like they did in 2012.....or have you FORGOTTEN already?  Offense, scoring points.  Julio is back and MOST importantly....so IS the OL, protection for Ryan AND A running game.  True we still need a pass rusher.  Getting rid of Abraham was the WORST move TD made.  What an idiot.  Their personalities clashed so TD let him go....talk about unprofessional and NOT whats best for the team....

@candlin14 lol, trade Hester for an O-Lineman? Did you just start watching football last week?

2.7 seconds is plenty of time for an elite NFL QB....just saying. I've put a stop watch on many QB's the good ones make decisions quickly and deliver the ball in less than 2.7 most plays.

Ackshun

@TampGator1 @Ackshun Didn't re-sign, cut, I don't care result is still the same. He was a top five corner and wanted top five corner money.... he didn't get it, he left and the Dolphins got a steal on an excellent CB.  And we got what we have now....

You miss the point on Abe, he would have stayed for less than he got with Arizona, he wanted to be here and he is still an elite pass rusher. Going into the second season without him, we still haven't got anyone who draws the respect he did from opposing DCs. Abe was our pass rush and we let him go.

BigCrimson75

@TampGator1

Miami signed him to a big, long-term contract as a unrestricted free agent.

-----

No they didn't.

They signed him to a 1 year contact for 2013 after we had a 1 year deal struck with Grimes that Hair-Gel backed out of at the last minute. Following last season, Miami inked him to a long term deal.

......other than that, don't let facts get in the way of a good rant.

@Dirtyb8

And it is fairly idiotic to call a highly paid NFL GM an idiot......"man."  Especially one that helped another team win multiple Super Bowls dealing with player personnel moves.

TampGator1

@Dirtyb8

Trufant would start for most NFL teams, and Alford is a very good, young CB as well. It is hard to cover when your team has hardly any pass rush at all coming from the defensive line or linebackers.  And those LBs would not make most other NFL teams as starters.....and maybe not as backups either.

BigCrimson75
BigCrimson75

@TampGator1

This is actually worse than your Miami signed Grimes to a long term deal before 2013!

If you actually think Hair-Gel had ANY say on 1 single player on NE's roster his time as Belechik's errand boy, you are a bigger idiot than I've always thought......and you well know what a dumba$$ I think you are!

Dirtyb8
Dirtyb8

@TampGator1 I don't care what he has accomplished in the past. I want to see what he has done for this franchise since the day he stepped foot as a GM. Let me start from 2008 actually. 2008 1st round pick, Sam Baker --- BUST!. 2009 1st round pick, Peria Jerry ---- BUST!. 2010 1st round pick ---- Sean Weatherspoon---BUST!.....Do I need to keep going? Its fans like you why SeenThatB4 gets to make fun of us. Why? Because you are satisfied with mediocrity. Because you are happy that we are 3-13 against his team. I hope you enjoyed our 4-12 season last year. Get ready for another disappointing one.

@TampGator1 @Dirtyb8 I'll take this one..  Dimitroff had very little to do with the success of the New England Patriots.  His job was scouting college players. So let me ask you, did the Pats succeed because they drafted great players or because they had a GM who saw talent in cast-off vets. Scott Pioli built the Patriots Super Bowl teams (well Pioli and cheating which always helps).  Dimitroff didn't really have much to do with, isnt that obvious?

@BigCrimson75 @TampGator1 All I know is that the Falcons have been much better under this regime than in the past, last season, being the exception. Don't have a problem with upgrading in the front office if possible, but I've seen decades of much, much worse than we have now. So, the current regime has earned a lot of rope in my opinion.

Y'all may be right. All I know is what I saw before TD and after.
