There hasn’t been a kicker taken that high since the New York Jets selected former Ohio State kicker Mike Nugent in the second round back in 2005.

The Falcons are in the market for a kicker, but have too many needs to select Aguayo in the second or even the third round.

“Conceptually taking a specialist that high, you’d better be really sure,” NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock said.  “Jacksonville took a punter in the third round, Brian Anger, a few years ago (2012), and they got roasted, and he didn’t turn out to be good enough to take in the third round.

“This guy is different because he puts points on the board for you. . . .I know he’s rated high, you’d better make damned sure you buy into that because there are a lot of good kickers who have been free agents over the years, and if you’re going to put a second- or third-round value on him, you’d better be really good for a lot of years. It’s extra pressure on the (general manager).”

Teams in need: Atlanta, Jacksonville, Dallas, San Diego and Cleveland.

Need area for Falcons? Yes. Matt Bryant, 40, is not going to kick forever. The Falcons didn’t re-sign Shayne Graham because they want to get a younger kicker in the pipeline to develop as Bryant’s eventual replacement.

The AJC’s D. Orlando Ledbetter gives his top players for the Falcons to draft at #17, talks about the interest in LB Myles Jack & tells CineSport’s Noah Coslov where the team may go in round 2.
