10 quick takes from Friday Night Lights practice

The Falcons held their Friday Night Lights event at Grayson High on Friday.

Here are some of the highlights:

1. Star of the scrimmage. Cornerback C.J. Goodwin started at left cornerback for Desmond Trufant. The converted wide receiver made a nice interception in the end zone on a Matt Schaub pass intended for rookie tight end Austin Hooper. Falcons coach Dan Quinn raved about him after the game.

2. Trufant out. Trufant was held out with a minor hip injury. Quinn said he’s expected him back soon and could have played.

3. Coleman returns. Running back Tevin Coleman, who suffered a foot injury Tuesday, returned to practice. He went through the individual drills by didn’t play during the 11-on-11.

4. Simms TD pass. Backup quarterback Matt Simms tossed a touchdown pass to rookie wide receiver Devin Fuller inside the red zone during two-minute drill.

5. Renfree looked sharp.  Backup quarterback Sean Renfree completed a screen pass to Gus Johnson.

6. Young linebackers. Weaskside linebacker De’Vondre Campbell, middle lineacker Deion Jones and strongside Vic Beasley opened with the first-team defense.

7. New look on line. Derrick Shelby opened at right defensive end next to tackles Grady Jarrett, Tyson Jackson and right defensive end Brooks Reed.

8. Moore on hand. Falcons wide receiver Lance Moore, who signed with the team earlier in the day was on hand. Quinn said the team was impressed with his quickness during his tryout.

9. Therezie with an interception.  Free safety Robenson Therezie intercepted a Schaub bomb that was tipped by right cornerback Jalen Collins.

10. Freeney was on hand. Falcons newly signed defensive end Dwight Freeney was on hand. He took a fitness jog once the players arrived. He was cheered when introduced to the crowd by team announcers Wes Durham and Dave Archer. He’s expected to practice on Sunday.
