FLOWERY BRANCH — The NFL Network will air “Michael Vick: A Football Life” following the Atlanta Falcons-Tampa Bay Buccaneers game on Thursday Night Football.
It’s been nine years and seven months since the federal dog-fighting investigation rocked the franchise and robbed it of the dynamic quarterback, who was sent to prison.
I hope they address why he lied to Falcons owner Arthur Blank and the team at the outset of the investigation when they could have possibly saved him from prison.
“I hope to be remembered as a guy who went through some difficulties but understood what it took to get back on top,” Vick said. “I have to continue to do my work and continue to help make change.”
Michael Vick: A Football Life includes interviews with the following people and more:
Kijafa Vick – Michael’s wife
Dan Reeves – Former Falcons head coach
Jim Mora – Former Falcons head coach
Andy Reid – Former Eagles head coach
Tony Dungy – Pro Football Hall of Fame head coach & mentor
Mike Tomlin – Steelers head coach
Frank Beamer – Former Virginia Tech head coach
Alge Crumpler – Falcons teammate
Jeffrey Lurie – Eagles owner
Kynan Forney – Falcons teammate
Ingrid Newkirk – PETA president
Henry Hudson – U.S. District Judge
Notable missing from the list of subjects are any Atlanta Falcons officials, Keion Carpenter, who played with Vick at Virginia Tech and Atlanta, NFL Network reporter Steve Wyche, who was the beat writer for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution during the 2007 season and someone from the American Human Society, which helped construct the case against Vick and the Bad Newz Kennel crew.
I covered the legal proceedings from Virginia during that bizarre season and know way too much about dog-fighting.
Provided below are some select quotes from Michael Vick: A Football Life:
– “When you make a mistake, you have to live with the consequences. I think he’ll be remembered as the person who was involved in dogfighting. That’s never going to be forgotten.” – Tony Dungy
– “Virginia Tech – I had never seen them on TV, never seen them in a bowl game. I felt like what Donovan [McNabb] had built at Syracuse was what Donovan had built. I was saying to myself this is an opportunity for me to leave a legacy.” – Michael Vick
– “Michael had a group of guys that he grew up with and they consistently stayed around him. We had a great bond on the field. We had a great bond in the locker room. But we weren’t going to dinners and eating out as teammates. Those things just weren’t happening.” – Alge Crumpler
– “He’s paid as large a price as anyone could ever pay for what he did, and he’d probably be the first one to tell you he deserved to pay that price. But he’s earned my trust.” – Jim Mora
