DEPTH CHART: 2014 Falcons’ Hard Knocks training camp

FLOWERY BRANCH – The first appearance on HBO’s “Hard knocks: Training camp with the Atlanta Falcons” is less than three weeks away.

The first show will air on Tuesday, Aug. 5 at 10 p.m. There will be an encore showing each week on Wednesdays at 11 p.m., culminating with the Sept. 2 season finale.

To help the TV producers out, we’re releasing our projected depth chart today (see below) and a couple of candidates for the longshot angle. Each year, they seem to pick out some obscure player who’s a longshot to make the team.

Countdown to camp: Day 10 – New coaches

FLOWERY BRANCH — The start of the Falcons training camp is 10 days away.

We’ll start our countdown by looking at the new assistant coaches. Mike Tice, Wade Harman and Bryan Cox were added to the staff this offseason.

Tice was named the offensive line coach and Harman was added as his assistant. They replaced Pat Hill and Paul Dunn. Tice is the third offensive line coach under head coach Mike Smith.

Cox was hired to replace Ray Hamilton, who was on Smith’s original staff and had also worked with him in Jacksonville.

Falcons WR Drew Davis out six weeks after foot surgery

Falcons reserve wide receiver Drew Davis had surgery to repair an unspecified foot injury and will miss the next six weeks, according to the team.

The Falcons placed Davis on the physically unable to perform list for training camp. The Falcons open practice on July 25, meaning Davis would miss about three weeks of camp under the timetable announced by the team.

Tom Moore: Johnny Manziel ‘will be good’

GREENSBORO — Longtime NFL assistant coach Tom Moore, 75, knows a few things about developing quarterbacks.

While with the Indianapolis Colts, he helped to develop Peyton Manning. Moore is currently a consultant with the Arizona Cardinals. He coached at Georgia Tech in 1970-71.

He likes how the Falcons have brought along quarterback Matt Ryan after drafting him third overall in the 2008 draft.

Arians expects Falcons to bounce back; Abraham to keep on ticking

GREENSBORO – Arizona coach Bruce Arians believes the Falcons, who dipped to 4-12 last season after going 13-3 in 2012, will bounce back in 2014.

In his first season as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, Arians led them to a 10-6 record last season, which included a 27-13 victory over the Falcons on Oct. 27, 2013.

The two teams will meet at the Georgia Dome on Nov. 30.

Peterson: Jones and White are best WR tandem in NFL

GREENSBORO – Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones recently laid claim to him and Roddy White being the top wide receiver tandem in the NFL.

Arizona cornerback Patrick Peterson, arguably the best pure cornerback in the league, agreed with Jones before playing in the Celebrity Golf Classic at the Reynolds Plantation on Monday.

Ex-Auburn and Lassiter star Lutzenkirchen killed in auto accident

Philip Lutzenkirchen, 23, a member of Auburn’s 2010 national championship-winning team and a former star at Lassiter High died Sunday morning in a car accident, Auburn’s sports information office confirmed.

The car accident occurred outside LaGrange, Georgia at approximately 3:06 a.m. Sunday morning. B.N. Talley, the officer who responded to the scene, told the Ledger Enquirer that a 2006 Chevy Tahoe missed a stop sign at a “t-intersection” before traveling off the intersection and into a churchyard. Falcons sign former Saints WR Courtney Roby

The Falcons signed wide receiver and special teams maven Courtney Roby, formerly of the New Orleans Saints, today, according to the team.

The Falcons created a roster spot by releasing wide receiver Dominique Croom on Tuesday.

Roby, 31, was the Saints’ special teams captain before being released in their cut-down to 53 players last season. He’s 6-foot-1 and 189 pounds and played at Indiana.

Roby was with the Saints from 2008 to 2012..

His biggest contributions were made on special teams as a return man and on punt and kickoff coverage. He was a “gunner” on coverage teams.

49ers TE Vernon Davis not stressed about his holdout

San Francisco tight end Vernon Davis participated in the 5 Star Athlete Management’s football camp hosted by Atlanta-based Super-Agent Todd France and several sponsors on Thursday at Mount Vernon Presbyterian School.

Davis, who recently laid out his case for a new contract as a quest columnist for MMQB.com, is not stressing about his contract position, hopes that Saints tight end Jimmy Graham wins his case and believes that San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick is developing nicely.

Jets WR Eric Decker high on Falcons DT Hageman

New York Jets wide receiver Eric Decker participated in the 5 Star Athlete Management’s football camp hosted by Atlanta-based Super-Agent Todd France and several sponsors on Thursday at Mount Vernon Presbyterian School.

Decker, who played his first four seasons with Denver, signed with the Jets as a free agent this offense. He received a five-year, $36.25 million contract with $15 million guaranteed with the Jets.

He played his college football at Minnesota and was a teammate of Falcons second-round pick DT/DE Ra’Shede Hageman.
