Q&A: Minnesota coach Mike Zimmer on facing the Falcons

FLOWERY BRANCH —  Minnesota head coach Mike Zimmer, who was with the Falcons as the defensive coordinator in 2007, knows a thing or two about managing a team through a crisis situation.

Back in 2007,  the Falcons lost quarterback Michael Vick to a federal dog-fighting investigation.

Zimmer, in his first season as Minnesota’s head coach, has lost his star running back Adrian Peterson because he’s been indicted for child abuse in Texas.

In a conference call with the Atlanta media on Wednesday, here’s what Zimmer had to say:

Falcons move into top 10 in PFT’s power rankings

FLOWERY BRANCH – The Falcons have cracked the top 10 in ProFootballTalk.com’s weekly power rankings.

The Falcons are the No. 9 rated team after being ranked 14th last week.

The Falcons, after going 4-12 last season, are off to a 2-1 start and were impressive in victories over New Orleans (37-34 in overtime) and Tampa Bay (56-14). They were defeated by the No. 2-ranked Cincinnati Bengals (24-10) on the road. Seattle is the No. 1 ranked team.

The Falcons are set to face the Minnesota Vikings, who are ranked 29th, on Sunday in Minneapolis.

FLOWERY BRANCH – Falcons reserve safety Kemal Ishmael was on the field against Tampa Bay in the first quarter when it was third down-and-10 from the Bucs 11.

The Falcons had a dime defense with three safeties (William Moore, Dwight Lowery and Ishmael), three cornerbacks (Desmond Trufant, Robert Alford and Robert McClain), four lineman (Corey Peters, Osi Umenyiora, Kroy Biermann and Jonathan Babineaux) and one linebacker (Paul Worrilow).
