FLOWERY BRANCH – Through the three rounds of the NFL draft, the Falcons have failed to fill a major need: Pass rusher.
Their attempts to trade up in the first round for South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney and for Auburn’s Dee Ford were unsuccessful.
In the second round, they selected Minnesota nose guard Ra’Shede Hageman and said they will convert him to a five-technique (run stopping) defensive end.
In the third round, they selected Wisconsin safety Dezmen Southward, who was projected as a strong safety and to be taken in the fourth round by NFLDraftScout.com. The Falcons said that he will play free safety.

All signs are pointing to the Falcons back standing pat before the draft starts at 8 p.m. tonight, but we’re projected a deal once things get underway.
When Houston goes on the clock, they’ll wait and see if they can get the Falcons’ second, third and next season’s first round pick. They should be a short conversation.
Then the Falcons will sit tight with [More]

We purposefully didn’t do 10,000 mocks during the extended pre-draft process this year.
That time was better spent on researching players, keeping track of the private workouts and doing as many interviews and conference calls as possible.
We are going to call this one Mock 4.0 and reserve the right to put up the Final Mock by 12 noon Thursday before heading out to Flowery Branch for the festivities.
Here’s how the first round of the NFL draft will proceed on May 8:
1. HOUSTON: Jadeveon Clowney, DE, South Carolina – They are on record with wanting to trade the pick. The price is [More]

Here’s what it would cost for the Falcons to trade up to the No. 1 spot to land Jadeveon Clowney.
The Falcons have to make up 1,400 points in the Draft Trade Value Chart.
After the Falcons and Texans flopped first-round picks there would be 1,400 point differential. The Falcons’ second-round pick (530 points) and third-round pick (250 points) this year, would leave them short of 620 points.
The Falcons would likely have to send next season’s first-round pick to make up the difference, if they believe the Falcons will draft 30th or lower next season.
If the Falcons win the Super Bowl, the [More]

FLOWERY BRANCH — Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff will hold his pre-draft press conference at 2 p.m. today at the team facility.
We have some questions for the general manager that I’ll send along with Michael Cunningham and the rest of Team AJC. (Someone has to pick up his freshman student from college today.)
The staff members will have videos, blogs and photos posted shortly after the presser. Also, more in-depth stories will post to MyAJC.com later in the day. (Feel free to stop back by!)

In the Falcons’ draft war room, calmer heads are going to prevail and they won’t make the trade up for South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney.
General manager Thomas Dimitroff is going to talk Assistant general manager Scott Pioli out of the deal or vice versa.
Houston will want too much it and it won’t make sense to do the deal.
With the draft just over a week away, the fan-base has spoken. They don’t want the deal.
It’s highly unlikely that the coaching staff, which is in need of talent upgrades across the board, would be in support of such a move.

The Atlanta Falcons are not playing around.
Next week is a big as the Falcons finalize their board for the NFL draft, which will be held May 8-10. This will be the “grit and toughness” draft. Don’t look for them to deviate on character. They will stay close to normal methods of drafting players with degrees, former team captains and individuals with high football IQ’s.
The Falcons start offseason conditioning on Monday. We’ll have some media access on Tuesday.
Also, several of the top prospects including UCLA linebacker Anthony Barr, South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney and Buffalo linebacker Khalil Mack are scheduled to visit Flowery Branch [More]
