Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins a big fan of Roddy White, Julio Jones

HOUSTON – Texans wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, who’s set to enter his second year in the NFL, didn’t want to come off as a drooling fan.

The South Carolina native had a chance to tell Falcons wide receiver Roddy White that he’d been watching him since his days at Alabama-Birmingham. He had a chance to tell Julio Jones that he admires he work.

But Hopkins remained calm and took care of his business.

Marvez picks Falcons to finish 9-7 or 10-6

FLOWERY BRANCH – Gil Brandt and Alex Marvez of SiriusXM NFL Radio concluded their stay at the Falcons training camp on Monday and then headed up the road to Spartanburg, S.C. to visit the Carolina Panthers.

During the wrap-up of their show they shared with their listeners what they thought about the Falcons.

Day 10: Falcons expected to shed some light on Hageman’s injury

FLOWERY BRANCH – Back from Canton and ready for Day 10!

The training camp-train rolls on down the tracks, picking up some steam as it’s headed for exhibition game opener against the MIami Dolphins at 7 p.m. Friday at the Georgia Dome.

With the Tennessee Titans coming to town and the Falcons a little antsy over the fights, Ra’Shede Hageman’s injury and Terren Jones’ plight, it should be an interesting day at the Branch.

Roddy White: The signing of the contract is done

FLOWERY BRANCH – Shortly after reporting for training camp Thursday night, Falcons wide receiver Roddy White signed his four-year contract extension at the team’s head quarters.

            White, 32, a four-time Pro Bowler who’s closing in on most of the team’s receiving records, signed the performance-based contract with is possibly worth $30 million. The deal will also give the Falcons some salary cap relief, expected to be about $3 million.

Before White’s deal the Falcons had $9,263.836 million under the $133,000,000 salary cap, according to the NFLPA. That number should increase to the $12 million to $13 million range once White’s contract [More]

FLOWERY BRANCH — The countdown rolls on!

Coach Mike Smith, who was out in Montana, and general manager Thomas Dimitroff, who was out cycling with Lance Armstrong, reported back to the office on Monday.

The HBO cameras are all in place and rolling. The first big event was Smith’s staff meeting with the assistant coaches.

The rookies report today, the veterans Thursday and the first practice is set for Friday.

Peterson: Jones and White are best WR tandem in NFL

GREENSBORO – Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones recently laid claim to him and Roddy White being the top wide receiver tandem in the NFL.

Arizona cornerback Patrick Peterson, arguably the best pure cornerback in the league, agreed with Jones before playing in the Celebrity Golf Classic at the Reynolds Plantation on Monday.

“The best duo in the NFL, I’d probably have to say that’s pretty accurate,” Peterson said. “Both of those guys are Pro Bowl caliber receivers, both of them are All-Pro caliber receivers. Both of them do a lot of good things for Matt Ryan to make his job a little easier. [More]

OTA: Roddy White returns to practice sessions

FLOWERY BRANCH — Falcons wide receiver Roddy, who had missed most of the OTA sessions because of the shooting death of his brother, was back at work on Tuesday.

He chatted briefly with head coach Mike Smith before heading to the practice field. Several players came over to welcome him back.

“It’s was nice to see Roddy back out,” Smith said. “He’s been through a lot through the last three or four weeks. He and has family. It was good for him to be with his football family today. He looked great.”

10 quick observations from Falcons open OTAs

FLOWERY BRANCH – While the Falcons continue to stress that they’ll be a multiple defensive team, the spent a great deal of time working on their 3-4 alignment during the first open OTA session on Wednesday.

Also, cornerback Desmond Trufant has been switched to left cornerback and Robert Alford lined up at right cornerback. Last season, Asante Samuel played left cornerback before Alford finished the season as the starter.

Generally, the defense appeared ahead of the offense, which is normal for this juncture of the offseason.

FLOWERY BRANCH – Falcons wide receiver Roddy White is not expected to be at organized team activities this week.

The Falcons will hold the second of their 10 non-contact practices at 10:30 a.m. today. (It’s open to the media, so we’ll have some blogs, videos and stories on AJC.COM and MYAJC.COM throughout the day.)

His family is still mourning the death of his brother, Tyrone Moore, Jr. He reportedly was still in Charleston on Tuesday.
