FLOWERY BRANCH – Shortly after reporting for training camp Thursday night, Falcons wide receiver Roddy White signed his four-year contract extension at the team’s head quarters.
White, 32, a four-time Pro Bowler who’s closing in on most of the team’s receiving records, signed the performance-based contract with is possibly worth $30 million. The deal will also give the Falcons some salary cap relief, expected to be about $3 million.
Before White’s deal the Falcons had $9,263.836 million under the $133,000,000 salary cap, according to the NFLPA. That number should increase to the $12 million to $13 million range once White’s contract [More]

FLOWERY BRANCH — The countdown rolls on!
Coach Mike Smith, who was out in Montana, and general manager Thomas Dimitroff, who was out cycling with Lance Armstrong, reported back to the office on Monday.
The HBO cameras are all in place and rolling. The first big event was Smith’s staff meeting with the assistant coaches.
The rookies report today, the veterans Thursday and the first practice is set for Friday.

GREENSBORO – Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones recently laid claim to him and Roddy White being the top wide receiver tandem in the NFL.
Arizona cornerback Patrick Peterson, arguably the best pure cornerback in the league, agreed with Jones before playing in the Celebrity Golf Classic at the Reynolds Plantation on Monday.
“The best duo in the NFL, I’d probably have to say that’s pretty accurate,” Peterson said. “Both of those guys are Pro Bowl caliber receivers, both of them are All-Pro caliber receivers. Both of them do a lot of good things for Matt Ryan to make his job a little easier. [More]

FLOWERY BRANCH — Falcons wide receiver Roddy, who had missed most of the OTA sessions because of the shooting death of his brother, was back at work on Tuesday.
He chatted briefly with head coach Mike Smith before heading to the practice field. Several players came over to welcome him back.
“It’s was nice to see Roddy back out,” Smith said. “He’s been through a lot through the last three or four weeks. He and has family. It was good for him to be with his football family today. He looked great.”

FLOWERY BRANCH – While the Falcons continue to stress that they’ll be a multiple defensive team, the spent a great deal of time working on their 3-4 alignment during the first open OTA session on Wednesday.
Also, cornerback Desmond Trufant has been switched to left cornerback and Robert Alford lined up at right cornerback. Last season, Asante Samuel played left cornerback before Alford finished the season as the starter.
Generally, the defense appeared ahead of the offense, which is normal for this juncture of the offseason.

FLOWERY BRANCH – Falcons wide receiver Roddy White is not expected to be at organized team activities this week.
The Falcons will hold the second of their 10 non-contact practices at 10:30 a.m. today. (It’s open to the media, so we’ll have some blogs, videos and stories on AJC.COM and MYAJC.COM throughout the day.)
His family is still mourning the death of his brother, Tyrone Moore, Jr. He reportedly was still in Charleston on Tuesday.

A person has been arrested and charged with murder in the shooting of the brother of Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Roddy White outside a South Carolina nightclub, according to Charleston, S.C. police.
Darnell Lafayette, 23, was arrested on Tuesday Charleston County chief deputy Mitch Lucas told the Associated Press.
The police are still looking for a motive. Officials said Lafayette walked up to Tyrone Moore Jr., 21, White’s half-brother, and fired three times, with two of the bullets striking the victim.
An argument is believed to have led to the shooting outside the Lake House Club south of Charleston.
Lafayette is currently in jail.

FLOWERY BRANCH — The sad news about the killing of Roddy White’s younger brother, Tyrone, kind of hovered over the end of the rookie minicamp.
White spent some time with the team members on Saturday night.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Roddy and his family,” Falcons coach Mike Smith said on Sunday. “It’s a difficult time for Roddy, but he’s had a lot of support. I’ve spoken with Roddy and I know that he was with some of his team mates last night. We’re here to support him, but I know it’s difficult for the entire White family.”

Some of the Falcons took to twitter to discuss the NBA’s lifetime ban of Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling.
No, Roddy White has not checked in with his thoughts yet. He’s a big basketball fan and likely won’t be able to resist this topic.
Former cornerback Dominique Franks is currently a free agent after spending past four seasons with the Falcons.
Defensive end Osi Umenyiora played last season with the Falcons and spending the previous nine seasons with the New York Giants.
Safety Kemal Ishmael is heading into his second season with the team.
